I think that you should start potty training your dog as soon as she arrives home. This shouldn't happen before she is 7 or 8 weeks of age. Puppies must stay with their moms until they learn how to... be a dog. I don't know if dog breeders train the puppies before that age but I think it is quite difficult to potty train a bunch of 8-10 puppies. Do you have a puppy?

As soon as the dog can walk by itself, waiting too much will make it more difficult latter, you have to show your dog, the spot you want him/her to do it, either the backyard, a sand box, a paper, whatever. Remember not to harm or hit the dog, just be firm, and show clearly what you expect, the animal will learn to respect your voice.

The younger the better but you have to be extra patient and kind with babies. It requires a different strategy. I don’t believe in paper spankings.

I have heard of pups getting trained as soon as they can walk enough to follow their mother out to the grass and 'follow' her in pottying in the yard. Would be hard to train them if they were unable to walk yet so I would say that would be too early.
