The Doctor is Out --- on Vacation

Oh my, so my doctor has scheduled a long 2 week vacation during the most critical time of my pregnancy. But, of course, I can't stop her from living her life. I'm already 37weeks, and that's considered full term, and I could give birth any time from today till the expected due date. So, she'll refer me to a colleague and I have to get the name and contact information on our next visit. The good thing is, if I happen to deliver while she's away, I can choose to go to the nearest hospital (just about 10 mins away), rather than traveling 45mins to an hour to the hospital in the city, with which she is affiliated. But, It kind of bothers me, that someone else will be doing the final job, when we've invested so much time with the regular prenatal visits, with this one doctor. It just adds to the anxiety and worries. I do hope this colleague would match up to her skill and knowledge. Should I be worried at all? Would it really matter if someone else attends to me during delivery?

don't get nervous and don't worry.relax yourself because you have a baby on your womb.having another doctor is just fine.i am pretty sure that your first doctor will endorse you to another doctor that is as good as her.it happened already to me.my ob-gyne who was checking me up and following my pregnancy history had also an emergency on the day i was giving birth, and i was endorsed to another doctor on the spot.and so far i am fine and well cared.as long as your first doctor endorses your medical history.my prayers that you give birth with no hassles..

With the reassuring responses I'm getting from my lotter friends, I'm able to relax my mind about my worries. Thanks so much. It feels good to know that I'm not the only unfortunate worry-freak pregnant woman in the world.

You shouldn't worry its just silly to worry over a doctor weather your doctor is the one to delivery your baby or not when your labor you will not care who is taking care of you in that time. He or she is just as smart and able. They all go to school for 7 years to know this stuff. To me it wouldn't matter if I had my doctor or not, they are all getting paid the same thing to safely deliver the baby and most of the time the nurse do all the work in labor any ways you only see your doctor when your pushing. At least with my daughter I only saw my doctor maybe 3 times through deliever and 2 times after delivery. If the doctor listen to me and what I want I don't care if they are male or female if its there first year of doing this or if it's there 50th year doing it. My life is in there hands and I'm just going to trust them with it as well as the life of my unborn baby. For all you know you could go 2 weeks after your due date as well. They always say plan for either 2 weeks early or 2 weeks late but always have that bag packed and ready to go by 32 weeks. That is what I did in my first pregnancy and in this one. So in a few weeks I'll be packing my bag again and have it by the door ready to go and I always take it with me after 32 weeks to the doctor because you never know when the doctor will say hey you know it it's time for some reason or another.

Normally if it's a doctor that your own doctor gives you two they are just as good if not some times better. I've meet the high risk doctor when I had my daughter he was fun and I wouldn't have mind him delivering my daughter. I only saw him 3 times but he did every well and every nice he is about the same age as my doctor. But she can be a bit well on the harsh side. She is from a different country but is the best in town and has build the birthing center where I had my daughter and all the doctors are partners with her that she has personally picked. At 32 weeks I packed my bag for my daughter because pretty much if you go in to labor after 32 weeks most doctors won't stop labor but if they can they will try to hold off labor if they can stop till 36 weeks. So I had mine at the door since I was home all of the time it just made sence to have it there which was a good thing because at 34 weeks they told us to put in the car because at any time I would be delivering. I'm going to do the same here in a few weeks when I'm far enough long. I should know at my 23 week check up if I'm going to be delivering early or not like I did before. The tech and my doctor want to recheck growth of my little guy to see if he is going to going to have big or small growth and if it's small like before then I will go early if not all the way to 40 weeks. I"m just hoping to make it to 36 weeks one week past when I had my daughter because I know the longer is better in most all case then coming out early but I know after 34 weeks most all development is fully working and most babies don't need help after that point some do but not all.

You had a male doctor for your first child? Were you comfortable with it?

I've packed up earlier in the month, and I should remind myself to put in the car later. I know I'm just being a worry-freak. I guess that's because, unlike before when Im still working, I had other things in mind, but this time, this is all that's driving me nuts. I do hope this other doctor would treat me at least 70% as good as my own doctor. It's just that, I got so used to how she is. She was my OB ever since I was still single and she knows my history and all. I'll just have to really trust them with everything.

Hello Jure, I have two kids and both deliveries took different doctors than I consulted on my pregnancy time. I am staying away from native and I consulted a doctor near to my place. But on delivery time I went to my native place as my all family people are there to care me at the time of delivery. Both of my deliveries attended by different doctors even I delivered in the same hospital, the doctor took my first delivery was on leave and I consulted the other one in the same hospital in the second term. The beauty is, the first doctor visited me after my delivery to see me and my baby as the staff nurses told her that she had taken my first delivery. So there is nothing to worry and everything will be smooth with you too. Best wishes.

Thanks for sharing your experience. I think I'll just have to keep an open mind on the set up and pray for everything to be smooth sailing.

I think there is nothing much to worry about it. If any other doctor operates you to get the baby out it does not matter much. Anyb make sure that the doctors in the near by hospital have the talent and have the experience for doing it. If this is ok them you can trust them. They will surely help you to get your baby out. Any way congrats for being a mother.

That's all I can hope for, that my doctor cares enough to choose the right doctor for me. She knows me since I was still in college. I just got so used to our patient-doctor relationship. Thanks.

Don't worry, this actually happens quite a bit! In fact, I don't think anyone in my family was delivered by the same doctor that had been in care of them while in their mother's womb. Sounds like a better deal for you anyway in terms of the drive and because you tend to have 'silent' pregnancies as well.

I think that often happens for those who don't go for regular check ups with their doctor, or those who just show up in the hospital when its time. For me, we've invested our time and effort to get to her clinic since the first few weeks of the pregnancy, and it just doesn't feel good to think that she won't be the one to finish this up.
