happy as a couple ...the perspective of getting married

most women want to get married and form a family with the man they love but when it comes to men some of them are simply scared of the perspective of getting married. I was recently talking to a friend of mine and he is with a girl for quite a while and I told him...hey why don't you ask her to marry you? and his answer was something like this why shouldI do it? do I need a piece of paper to be with her. but in the end he confessed me that he is scared of the perspective of getting married...of taking a commitment that is supposed to be for live, and that doing this would simply change their relationship. so what do you think, does marriage change a relationship?
