So I want to learn how to program so I can make my own iPhone apps, games, and have it as a skill for freelancing and if I decide to major in engineering but I'm having a hard time getting pass the very basics. I've been trying for a few years now. I've tried following free written online tutorials, watching free and paid video courses, attended the interactive Codeacademy, and even bought and read some books. The languages I've tried include Java, Javascript, C, C++, Objective-C, and maybe a few others too. I think I could write "Hello World" in all of them but that's about it. What I would like to know is how I can get used to programming quicker and learn it better as it is very frustrating that I can't get past the starting point because it's too difficult or not interesting. People often tell me the best way is to program as I follow along whatever I'm using (whether it be book or video) but that has just felt like copying and pasting. If anyone has any experiences to share on how they got started programming, that would be great to hear!

Hello, i am a computer science student and i have learned a few programming languages and i know some basics. But let me tell you this, every student i met, have the same problem as you, even i do as well since it's hard to understand the logic of the program. But my friend, the way to be better at programming is to practice practice practice. All you have to do is practice, try making some programs that is out of the box, explore everything from the basics up to the most advanced. It is also great to have a real tutor or an instructor since they will teach you the basics as well as the advanced and i guarantee you will improve. I hope you will become great at programming, let's make our applications in the future. Have a great day. :D

Thank you for your response! It really brighten up my day and gave me hope again. I guess I will just have to keep trying harder and maybe find a real instructor. Please add me as a friend! I would like to ask some questions about your major and related experiences.

Apart from learning the basics of Objective C, you should have a clear conceptual understanding about the design pattern that's followed for iPhone app. For e.g, In developing an iPhone app you use MVC or Model View Controller pattern. A programmer should be aware about where to write the code. Once you understand the concept, It would be easier for you to start coding. Instead of watching too many tutorials I think you should start trying it out. Errors will come, but these errors contains lot of information that will guide your coding.

well I'm not a game developer but I have a friends which they do love to create games and I believe that if you love doing something and your good to it. well its on your genes that motivate you to be creative and powerful. right now my batchmates is a game developer here in the Philippines and also if you think thats good for you its also good to invest yourself to study more, enroll in some good IT schools or of you think self studying is enough, you need to invest to practise more.
