"he acknowledged his roots in accepting the award." Do you think he would have refused 600000 Euros if they were not from Finland? As a Linux user I am happy for Torvalds, though I don't understand the interest of a technology prize rewarding 20 years old inventions. Somebody like Torvalds or Grätzel in 2010 for a 1991 discovery have nothing to prove today, and this prize would be more useful if it was given to younger inventors. Finally, I think Torvalds should have better refused it and asked for a Nobel prize or nothing. Indeed, as these euros are from Finland, I understand his attachment to his native country.

I have never said that Torvalds has no future as a researcher, but that he has nothing to prove because he is already worldly known without this prize : I think that this technology prize is looking for acknowledgement when the jury gives it to already famous people like Linus Torvalds, but would be more useful if it was given to new inventions. Android is at Linux what MacOS is at FreeBSD, and I don't think that people can realize what is Linux by using an Android phone or tablet. I bought recently an Android tablet and I have quickly installed a dual boot with Angstrom GPE to have a true Linux : I can get software on Debian or Ubuntu repositories instead of being limited to a closed Android market.
