What is the car horn for anyway?

So I am driving down the road the other day. A two lane road that the left lane becomes a left turn only lane. I always watch closely here because many times I have had people come over on me when they realize that they have to turn if they stay in that lane. As I am driving this way the other day the car in that lane decided to come over. They did not look before going to merge so I put on my breaks and I honked to let them know I was there. I feel this is what the car horn is for, but it seems as if this person disagreed as they rolled down there window to flip me an obscene gesture. So what is your opinion? Is the horn a simple tool to honk at friends to say hey, or is it a tool to try to help prevent accidents?

I think you already know the answer to this. Of course it is to prevent accidents! However, usually you will find that the person who made the mistake is very on edge, and if you honk at them they do get aggressive for a moment. If you know it's not your fault, don't be taken aback by their obscene gesture. Just honk some more at them :)
