What Would You Choose Between...?

Yesterday evening my dad returned home after attending an engagement ceremony of my cousin sister. We asked dad about the boy (would be groom) and his family and the ceremony arrangements. Dad very expressively told us about everything, so much that we could almost visualize everything. But I still wanted to see the boy's picture. To my surprise dad took out his camera and showed us the pics. Wow! He was really handsome. They both made a lovely pair. Later I began wondering that how time and technology both have changed. Earlier a skilled video shooter or a photographer was a must for every ceremony, but now digital cameras, mobile phones with megapixels and other technologies have replaced the conventional style of video shooting. Would you still like to hire a professional video shooter or photographer for a ceremony or would you yourself do the video recording or may be ask a friend for it?

hi inderjeetji Until 1992-3 I was the photographer for all weddings in our family. Didnt have a precious camera but still they all liked my photography. But in 1992, there was a theft in our house and my camera and albums were stolen among other things. Since then I gave up photography. Then I got a handset which had a camera, but that too is now defunct as they said the repair costs are more than an ordinary handset. So I am using an ordinary, extremely ordinary handset since the past 4 years. For hiring professionals, yes, they can never be replaced - no matter what technology we have at our hands. Given the choice, I would prefer to have someone hired so that we can enjoy more.

In fact yes, dad did offer me a Nikon camera (much better than the one I had) as they felt Photography was my passion. But you know dear, I have always been on the thin line between emotionalism and practicality. The emotional me was hurt and didnt allow me to return back to photography. Then when I had the camera phone, I did try to re-start but by then other things had taken over, I was ill down with Ulcerative Colitis. The only photographs from that cellphone camera were of me and my wife - when we went out in 1997 - I loved to drive and drove her to nearby places of interest. So I have about 50 of those photographs. Now, she insists me to re-start for my own self again, and I feel she is now saving some money for buying us a handycam or some good digital camera... unsure of that right now

Wow! So you were a professional family photographer... sounds nice. Didn't anyone insist you to take up photography again, as you said everyone liked your photography? I too would like to hire a proficient photographer for a ceremony like wedding, but for small family functions I would choose to take photographs and make videos using my own camera.

There is a difference between a professional and an amateur. It is not that hard for everyone to hold a camera or a videocam. It is the skill level to shoot and the artistic impressions that makes an excellent picture or video from many good ones. If you want to be perfect on your most important occasion and if you can afford economically, then go for a professional. You will see the value in their work.

I agree with you that there is a difference in the work of a professional and an unskilled person, but I guess for small occasions people can give a try using the technologies in hand. But for a grand ceremony like wedding one needs to hire someone who is professional.

I have friends and cousins who are into photography and even took lessons for it. I have to say they are pretty good in it that I hired my own cousin to be the official photographer at my own wedding. When it's time to pay him up, he refused our money and said that that will be his wedding gift for us: the pictures, videos. I say wow, and we welcome the additional honeymoon fund. :)

Oh wow! You are quite lucky. You got your wedding photos and videos been made by your cousin who has taken a professional training in it and that too not just free of cost, but as a wedding gift. Wow! That's so sweet of your cousin.
