I went to my doctor's yesterday as he requested to see me. My iron has actually gone down, and suddenly he cares about how low it is. He said he will be sending me to a hemo something doctor. I will then have to go to the hospital and get iron through an IV. I was told it will be a series of IV's over a period of time, then I have to go back yearly. My body simple doesnt absorb it because of the colitis.

As long as your colitis acts up you will probably be low on several things. Did he say anything about your calcium. Most people I know with colitis or other digestive disorders end up with malabsorption of calcium and really weak bones.

That stinks, but I hope this resolves your problem. I know 2 people that required similar treatment. One only had to do one round, the other had to do it again a few years later.

So you will be say given ten iv's of iron and then this will repeat every year around the same time? That kind of stinks to have to get that done, but if it helps with your iron absorption... Will the Iron help with the colitis? Didn't your doctor first try to get you to take the higher strength vitamin's for iron and that didn't work? I'm just glad he's taking everything serious now and you should feel better with more iron, less sleepy and cold.

You will see a hematology doctor that is an expert in blood disorders. IV Iron, is treated like getting blood and your iron must be pretty low if they are considering this. This is just a thought, and I am only asking, have you tried taking an iron supplement with orange juice. The vitamin c in orange juice actually aides your body in absorbing the iron. It can't hurt to try.

I wish you the best of luck with it. Colitis can be a huge problem. Hopefully the IV with the iron can help you get the adequate amount you need. There are some iron pills to take as well, my dad had to take them for awhile. But your doctor knows best for what you need, personally.
