What happened to the lyrics?

A friend of mine asked me to visit a website wherein there was a comparison of Richard Marx's song, Right Here Waiting against Justin Bieber's song, Baby baby. Looking at the stanzas of both songs, Marx's song has more meaning, more depth compared to Bieber's hit song and this has seem to be the norm for most of the songs being released recently. I wonder if producers and writers cannot find a theme or story to put into the song or is one word and la-las sells more? What do you think?
