It shows in how many discussions you've been participating. This means that if you write x replies in the same discussion the number will not increase. Example:
Let's say you just join so you will have YourName (0)
You start a discussion: YourName (1) once credited
In that discussion you have members participating and you post 5 replies: YourName (1) no change
You reply to 5 other discussions: YourName (6) once credited
