Are Anime Conventions For Nerds?

Well since Otakon is today, I was just wondering what your opinion is on the infamous conventions. Conventions are when they dress up as there favorite character (or sometimes not) and show off their pride of liking whatever the convention is. It just so happens that this is an Anime convention. Honestly I never thought about going to one until it was too late and seriously missed out on a lot of fun. It's a great way to express your interests to other people who share the same interest. A lot of people make fun of me for liking anime as they think it's strange but I think that it's very different and I enjoy what I like. People constantly make fun of me for it and I was just wondering...do you think conventions are for the so called "nerdy" or "weird" people? I personally do not but I'm just wondering what everybody thought about it.

Certain hobbies are just stereotyped to be nerdy. My partner and I are sort of a nerd couple since our interests are as follows: novels, mangas, DOTA, any kind of word game (We play TextTwist every single night) watching the news, watching documentaries, and guitars and cats (we have three of both.) SO, the people who watch soap operas and read fashion magazines and showbiz news think we are lame. But what is lame anyway? There's no arguing when it comes to taste. I think we should not be bothered about whether people think our interests are nerdy or not. As long as we enjoy the activities we do, and we don't really hurt anyone in the process, then everything is okay. Glad you had fun at the anime convention. We are thinking of coming to one, too. We are just saving up for a nice camera to take pictures of cosplayers!~

It doesn't matter if it's for the "nerds" or "weird" people.. if you like it then just go for it. People can say whatever they want, but you can go to where ever you want and do what you want. Don't take the people that make fun of you for what you love seruisly and just be yourself=]

it just so happened that many of my nephews and nieces are into anime... whether be it for the stuff they watch, read, draw, play or participate in. in the last few years they've been fairly active in participating in cos-plays and such and even connect with anime lovers in fb. the most recent one was just a week ago organized by japan embassy here in my side of the world. my niece was ranma girl. i don't think anime conventions are for nerds. i believe... just like any hobby or interest... this is a field of art and expression. judging by my nephews' and nieces' experiences... it can be loads of fun. and the entire family is in full support. my "ranma-girl" niece is actually participating in the dubbing academy workshop. she's really very excited.
