everywhere standards are erected to tell you what is and what is not. most people would tell us to buy this because it's good for us. and don't buy this because it will kill you. certain people form organization to set these standards. they are the one that determine what is and what is not. but what i really think about these people is that we fall on the notion that they are always correct. and at times we failed to see things through our own eyes. as an artist, creativity has payed the prize... we have become keen to following rules that we failed to become expressive of our opinions. there was a point that i have been keen to the rules that aesthetically my works become dead... there is no problem with them when it comes to technicalities. what was lacking was the soul of my works... i change my ways... i break the rules and i found myself again the soul that lack in all of my other creations... sometimes it's when you break the rules that you truly free yourself. and it doesn't mean that they are the majority they are right... sometimes it means that all the fools are on the same side.

sometimes rules give us nothing but handcuffs... we should understand that rules can impression you and trap your creativity. you should set it free.

rules do bind us and we can not do so and so things. I am one person who hates rules. I don't like it at all. I want to be free. And to get happiness if I have to break some rules , I will. I want to see the world how I see it, not people making rules for me.

I think it would depend a lot on what you are talking about. If you talk about the road laws, then obviously some time and research has been put into it to study the human psychology and understand how humans function and certain laws like speed limit and yielding are put up. If you talk about food and other stuff then it sometimes depends on what they feel is best for others. For example there are lots of research articles everyday which contradict some other research. In fact all the rules/ laws are based on the law of averages to keep everybody safe. bourne :)
