So I'm curious to know, when you were in highschool what factors contributed to a person being popular? I think this is interesting because I bet the factors vary when it comes to being in different parts of the world. When I went to high school, being athletic played a factor on popularity as well as your last name. If you came from a well known family, whether it be because of their wealth or athleticism, you were popular.

When I was in high school,my father was alive. He was the most respected man not only in our home town, but the whole district.Even the parents of my classmates would approach him to solve their family disputes. My father was a man of noble character and my mother was extremely polite and a generous lady. The popularity of my parents was the reason of my popularity in the school.I was an average student who would never take part in extra curricular activities.Only a few of my classmates were my friends. But they liked and loved me.Mainly it was the popularity of my parents that was the sole reason of my popularity in high school.

I think its same evrywhere. Popular student can be caused by many factors such as: smart, good looking face and charming, celebrity "branded", join in many club and give many exellent contribute to school, or rich parents :D

I think having rich & popular parents goes a long, long way in making a guy / girl popular.. High school is always a crazy time.. Its the time when teenagers build their individual identities... I shudder to think which path my son would take once her reaches that age.. :)

Ok some factors contributing to people being popular at my school was , physical appearance , attitude and did I say looks lol . I believe also that different countries have different factor to being popular . You attend a certain high school based on grade . So if you attend a top school then how smart you are will make you popular in that group .

Attitude didn't seem to have much of an affect at my school, if you were stuck up you were still popular as long as you met other criteria.

I'm a bit shy and unfortunately sometimes people mistake that for being stuck up which is not the case at all.

Being stuck up was kinda my attitude to people , I usually heard it a lot and I always wonder . You can have good attitude , bad attitude , stuck up attitude, once you are extreme in one of those you have a good chance to stand out and not blend in .

More likely, you're family standards has been impact on being popular, secondly the contribution or achievement you have done which has create an impact for the school, this plays a major role on how a student can be popular at school. :)

I am active in extra curriculum activities and this made me popular, i guess. I'm a transferee student and late enrollee so i guess this factor made them curious plus i came to a family who's a bit known. Being popular is a great feeling but to much digging in your life is too much. So, popularity has advantage and disadvantage.

I agree that too much digging into your life becomes too much and this is bound to come along with the popularity. What kind of extra curricular activities are you involved with?

"extra curricular activities" rather. I'm into sports,i joined every school club including English club(LOL not good at it but it will help me improve my grammar), and a school officer. A friend of mine campaign me without informing me,i was shocked cause my names are everywhere. My grades are average and sometimes have red marks. I guess this failing marks makes me popular? My teacher loves so they call my father often.

I admire that you joined something even though you don't consider yourself good at it. As you said, it'll help you improve something so this is a good thing. Thanks for your post.

As far as high school is concerned, I used to live in the Dutch Caribbean at that time. But, the school I went to worked under the American System. So, American culture was interwoven into the cultural fabric of the school. Add to it, a South American influence & you have a pretty heady mixture for a guy from India. Popularity was based on physical appearance & athleticism. I was never a popular guy as I did not match the "schema" of a popular guy. Anyway, athletes & American guys were popular...

That's OK that you weren't popular, sometimes I laugh when I hear about where the popular kids ended up after high school. A lot of them lost their popularity, we'll put it that way..

Unfortunately, at the school I went to when I was younger, your popularity very much depended on your personality. You might think that this is a good thing, but the nice people weren't popular. It was those who were bullies or talked about people behind their backs who were the popular ones, and this is something that I wish had never happened because I always hated it. If the bullies took a dislike to you, the rest of the school would hate you as well because of the fact that the bullies had. I was hated a lot in school because I was too nice and just didn't stand up for myself. I hope that this is a lesson that other people could learn in the future.

Wow that's not fair at all, having to pay a price for being nice is silly. Talk about a way of supporting the bullies!

Unfortunately i was not among the popular crowed in high school. I had to watch from the sidelines with envy. It seems that most of the popukar girls had a few things in common. they were flawlessly pretty. they were cheerleaders and they had the attention of every boy in school. Teachers would also dote on them making it even tougher for the rest of us. Popular boys were usually the best looking boys in school, had a car that everyone was jealous of and was usually a star athlete on the football or basketball team. I dreamed of being popular but it just was not in the cards for me in high school.

I think both the cheerleader and football player status has played a factor in popularity for a long time, usually these were the ones who were voted homecoming king and queen as well.

In United States, if you are good at sports, or you are a jock, you definitely will be popular in school, and you rule it. Being a pretty girl, and be attractive, cool and stylish can also be the contributing factor to it. So, there were some factors that would make you popular. Anyway, be yourself, no matter what. Popular or not, it won't be matter, high school still is a learning ground for all of us.

Much the same here in Canada as well. You're right, high school is a learning ground and we all take a part of that with us after we graduate.

I guess it depends on the school. In mine, these were the factors: -confidence and assortion, not being afraid to talk -coolness, kind of rebellion, talking self-righteously and sometimes rudely about stuff -exciting life -money -fashionableness, trendiness -interesting love lives -obnoxious people

Interesting love lives? Care to elaborate on that one? Do you mean couples who seem to have a special relationship would be popular?

In my high school years, I wasn't that too much popular, when I tried to join an organization of student council. I knew that my party members are very well known rather than I but when it was my turn to tell my name in front of my co-classmates, I feel that I wasn't belong. After a week of voting, I was shocked because I was one of the choices of the students. Being popular doesn't need to join many activities. You can be popular just showing the true you or your true self. Many people will respect you because they know that you are an athlete, a genius, a mathematician and many more but nothing change because they will tell you are are simple and showing the true you.

I think people have respect for those who are just themselves and don't put on a fake show, I find it so easy to sense fakeness and it shows weak character.

Being athletic still counts. Plus, If you are rich, you somehow become popular too. Most of the time, people who are more sociable are the ones that are popular.

Sometimes rich people are popular but I did know of a few rich kids in highschool who were hated because they were too in style, they wore outfits like what you'd see in magazines and because I lived in a smallish town people didn't recognize the style and thought they looked weird.

In my country which is Philippines, being beautiful is the best factor of being popular, the next is athleticism.
