Workplace violence: I hope we can avoid it

This is what I just have read: "Workplace violence can be defined as any physical violence, threat of violence, harassment, verbal abuse, or intimidation against workers. It is estimated that 1 million U.S. workers are victims of workplace violence each year. Workplace violence can be inflicted by a disgruntled employee, manager, co-worker, visitor, customer, family member, or a stranger. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) data indicated homicide has become the second leading cause of occupational injury death, second only to motor vehicle deaths." I'm not aware that this kind of violence is possible in our workplace. I hope we can avoid it. Don't want to be a perpetrator or a victim. I hope our Human Resources Department people should educate the employees so as to avoid it or even minimize the incidence and its effect. As a worker, what are thoughts on this? What do you think are the practical ways on how to avoid and handle cases like this?

Work place violence are quite common in US countries. Recently i read an article about work place violence and shocked to know lot of Us persons lost their life due to this violence. This kind of culture is slowly spreading in other countries, we must avoid it before spreading it in our country. Our work is our god and we must give more importance to our work and work place. We must keep a good friendship with our colleagues and give respect to our higher authorities. Avoid getting hatred with co workers. This kind of hatred is the main reason for the work place violence, don't give more importance to silly issues and little quarrels. The depressed employee or employer is the reason for this kind of violence. They don't know what is good and what is wrong in their depressed stage and do lot of unwanted things in the work place which lead in a great disaster. Hope this kind of violence don't take place in our working area. The HR people must select the correct candidate and proper employee for the job and give training to avoid this kind of unwanted things. The employee and employers must have a good relationship and don't give more importance to the silly issues. Both workers and employee must try their maximum to increase the productivity and service of the company and avoid this kind of unwanted violence in the work place.

Though we can avoid such in the workplace, we should remain humble and have a good attitude towards co-workers. Through that, we may somewhat minimize the occurence and consequence, if ever that would happen. Thanks

To be honest, I saw some verbal argument on workplace before, and Luckily those incidents didn't turn into physical violence. Because there are some people who willing to interfere, and separate both arguing parties. In reality, in workplace, we better find a solution to those problems, and hopefully people won't make it such big deal. If you see a ensuing argument, better call up the supervisor, or the manager come to interfere. Better, find the human resources personnel to solve such problems on hand.

You are right there. We need those supervisors and managers to diffuse something that can escalate to something bigger problem. Thanks

You are right there jazel. We have a lot in our company but to a lesser degree. not that violent but it is quite alarming. Our HR department is doing its job here. As employees, we are there to observe, learn and always be vigilant. Thanks

The news I often heard that fall into this category are about those overseas workers. They are oftentimes being abused by their employers abroad. Things like these can actually happen to anybody. We just be very observant of the people around us. If we happened to notice unusual acts or behavior, maybe we should tell somebody about it. We should have the phone numbers of authorities available at all times.
