Need help to build LAN between 2 systems

Hi All, I had a laptop and normal desktop PC and I just want to connect these 2 systems, so I decided to connect these 2 by through LAN. I studied in my first year btech how to build LAN but I forgot now and while searching in google I didn't get that, Can any one help me how to build LAN and what I need to have to build this and the process or tell if any other way is there to connect these.

If you are using windows 7 on both your laptop and pc,then just need an ordinary LAN cable.You simply need to connect them to the LAN ports,one end to the laptop and the other end to the PC.And,that's it.However,It will take a few moments to establish the connection.And you don't need to buy any modem.
