Hi. I am just curious. What if a college graduate without work experience applies for a job and competes for this position with a college student who has work experience. Who will get hired assuming that both of them come from the same major? The only differences are college diploma and work experience.

HI, I really don't know, I am an undergraduate, I only finished 2nd year college haven't had the chance to go back and finish my studies. But I already worked as a bank bookkeeper for 10 years and had a part time job as a secretary of the bank's legal counsel for 4 years. But I am still worried that I may have difficulties applying for an office work because I don't have a diploma to present.

Thanks for this enlightening response. I have been thinking about it since I am still a college undergraduate student. I just cannot focus on studies alone these days so this questions pops out of my mind.

call centers are accepting undergraduates if you have a good grasp of English, and your communication skills are good. If you are need of work immediately you can try it, but I suggest to try hard to finish your studies and have your diploma, it is still different.. and that is my biggest frustrations in life, not finishing my course, just hoping that i can still have time and money to do it.someday :)

Yes, you still have the chance. The distance education in the Philippines is growing today. In my case, I came from a classroom education in a prestigious university, but I am currently studying at home right now. You can too. What course do you plan to finish?

I think the one with the diploma will get the job. Most of the companies now requires a proof that you graduated from college, yes some companies only hires applicants with experience but they will look first if you graduated before looking at your experience.

Do they trust a neophyte with diploma more than a person without a diploma but has superb skills?

That depends on the company. My friend for example is an excellent web developer he is very skilled in his forte even though he did not finished college. When he transferred then to Singapore he was not able to get a job because the companies there required a diploma, they did not even bothered to check his skills first. So he end up us a company driver there and he was willing to study again to get a bachelors degree.

It depends, because some work requires college degree, and some work requires a experience. It also depends on the company. But if I were the once to choose, ill hire the one with experience.

I guess your point is experience is more preferred based on your opinion. I guess that makes sense as the saying goes, "experience is the best teacher." Thanks for your response.:)

hi myklops. I've been working for 18 years now and been a working student. I was able to get my bachelors degree after 5.5 years. I did pursued to finish my college for i have been open to considerations they make in promoting an employee. Experience and degree matters in the promotion of an employee. In the Philippines, it is understandable that due to many graduates we have yearly, competition becomes stiff. With this, they consider requirements for promotion which education is among.

Thank you for sharing. I hope there will also be some ways for companies to have wider awareness when it comes to the measurement of the true abilities of a person instead of relying on a degree.

I think it will works well with the one who has the best skill in the job offer. I mean, even if we think positively, people will still find it unfair if the ones who didn't graduated got the job right? But if we will just broaden up our mind, it will always depends upon the knowledge and skill of the person who are applying for the job. :) But still I encourage everyone who haven't graduated yet to finish what they have started. :) Happy day everyone.

You're right about that. I guess skills plus a college degree would be better.

I know someone who is a college graduate and doesn't have any experiences yet, though she's already 27 years old. She got her job easily because she has great looks. I think looks/personality is also another consideration besides work experiences.

I think that can also be an important asset especially for models I think.

I know of a friend who had all the credentials but turned down by the newly installed mayor in favor of someone who is a family friend. Chances are, you may be hired for whom you know and not for what you know.

Really? Wow. So it's really true that "who you know is more important than what you know." After all, no man is an island. Thanks for your insight.:)

depends on the work experience he has had, pal.and, the real person's ability. maybe the college graduate with the diploma has had work first because he is older than the college student. know what, although work experience is an edge, we cannot actually measure someone's ability and capacity with just that. and if your asking who's gonna get hired between the two, try to give them series of exams, maybe paper exams and actual, exams, just to know who really is more capable of doing the job.

If we're talking of credentials, the employer might as well consider the one with degree. But the question is, will every employer do that? Some just might eschew the rules and get the one without diploma, let him get the job done. If fortunate, they might sponsor his degree completion. :) That's a personal opinion.

I've competed with old, graduate, skillful individuals when I tried applying on jobs. To the point of that I am only an undergraduate student, no working experience, but have business handling experience, and high confidence. I'm glad to be hired (but I don't accept the jobs since I'm just testing my abilities... Sort of just testing myself.) It always depends on the capabilities, skills, knowledge, confidence, and personalities of the job applicants to win the position.
