i just wandering if the idea of crab mentality belong to us filipinos and still present in our society today? why do i say that because i experience it, in my own aunt (which i hated very much!). she is not happy on what we have today, she always make false stories with our neighbor. worst she is always angry to us! as if we sinned against her. she is always jealous to us and i feel it in my nerve. is this the sign of crab mentality?

Crab mentality is said to be inherent in the Filipino culture. I do not know if like the colonial mentality, it was instilled to us during the Spanish occupation. Anyway, crab mentality is when a person tries his best to pull a person down whenever that other person is going up. Much like the behavior of crabs when getting out of a basket. So if you were making some progress and your aunt is trying to pull you down, that is indeed crab mentality.

Crab mentality is very evident to us Filipinos for I am confident that it is our defense mechanism to hide/cover our flaws and failures in life. In order to hide those imperfections, we tend to point fingers onto others to divert the attention from us. That is just my opinion with regards to this matter.
