TV Problem

For some time now my TV has a problem. There is black band at the top of the picture and below that wider band that is brighter than the rest of picture. Together these take up a little less than one fifth of the height of the screen. In addition, if something, like a person's head, goes up into the black band part it bends back down into the screen. There are no controls on this TV for adjusting things like this; you can only adjust brightness, color, etc. The TV is out of warranty so it would cost to have it looked and that cost would probably be nearly as much as a new TV. The only thing that I can think of is to try to search online for help but even if I could find some it would probably mean opening up the TV and doing something to the electrons inside of it. While I have done stuff like that on simpler things, I am reluctant to do it on a TV.

Does this only happen when watching television or does the same happen when DVD's are played? If it is only when watching television is could be due to the dimensions of the television : http://www.ehow.com/how_8351652_remove-bands-around-tv-picture.html but if not however annoying it means there is nothing wrong with your television. The best is to check if your television make and model have a known issue, because even if it is no longer in warranty, if it a factory design flaw they are obligated to fix it at no cost to the customer - I have a digital camera that stopped working a few years after I bought it and discovered that the fault had been reported as a known factory defect, the camera was fixed for free due to it being a defect and still works now beautifully. I hope you find a solution though.

It wasn't there when I got the TV a few years ago. It just started in the last few months. I haven't played a DVD since it started but I have played tapes and it is still there.

If it appears on the tapes that means that it is something wrong with the television and not the signal. Since you mention that the television is older model as the banding is quite common with HD and Plasmas due to the dimensions of the signal I assume it is the traditional square televisions it may unfortunately be damaged and will require the repair done by a technician, which can be expensive. However since the television is not under warranty and if you are handy fixing things there is a lot of self help sites and videos out there, you may be lucky (or unlucky) and someone else may have had the same problem and have a solution that is quick and easy. I will note that even though I do tend to try and fix things and generally they work out quite well, it seems that when something starts going wrong it seems that something else will break soon after. So good luck with whatever option you go with.
