C:\Primary Drive

In computers all over the world, C:\ is the primary drive or system drive, unless you do a manual installation and select any other drive. Why was C drive chosen as the primary drive? I think the choice of A:\ would have made more sense. Explain.

Long time ago there are drive A and B in the computer. But these two drivers are for floppy disks only. One floppy disk can store no more than 1.4MB. I am not sure whether you have seen them before. I think it may not available after 1999. And today all the computer don't have the floppy driver, too.

Yes I remember using floppy disks myself. You're right. Nowadays floppies have no importance. These days computers don't even come with a floppy driver. For data movement, external hard disks and pen drives are best (till date). So even though floppies are a thing of the past, the structure of the drives didn't change. I think with time it should have been evolved, that would make current day computing more logical. A primary drive A:\ would make more sense than C:\ now, isn't it? Good day!

1.44MB, you are so young and innocent, thats a high capacity stiffy disk, before that we had low capacity at 720KB, Single sided disks at 360KB,and that was just 3.5 inch disks. There were 5.25 inch disks as well, these are the proper floppy disks, with a maximum of 1.2MB. Not to mention a thing I only ever held, but never used an 8 inch floppy disk, anybody remember using those ?

There was also a storage device with a capacity of 720KB? Never heard or these those! I have a decade old digital diary which has a capacity of 128KB.

hello friend, i think you need to know more about computer hardware. do you heard the name floppy disk. the A:\ and B:\ drives are the floppy drives. the next name is C:\. and a user can change the primary partition to d:\, e:\ or any other drives.

Lol. Not only I'm aware of a floppy, I've used it myself when I was a kid. I remember that A:\ & B:\ were for floppies. But my point is that they are now outdated. With the advancement in technology, these awkward things should also evolve and be more sensible. Good day!

Well really an interesting discussion. The concept of C drive is there right from the beginning and since then nothing has changed. This is human tendency which is pretty much normal. Even today we all are obsessed with C drive but with time, we all have started to partition our memory and have created other drives like D and E drives. What say?

In windows point of view "C" is the primary drive, it is a not a must. there is no any technically term. the letter "A" and "B" were usually reserved for Floppy Disk drive. it is just a letters assigned to HDD partitions.

There's no usually about it, even if you only had one floppy drive you still had drives A and B, that's how you used to copy stuff, read drive A, swap disks, write to drive B (in the same physical disk drive), swap back read some more, swap again write some more. In fact if you try it in you all singing all dancing 32 Core monster windows 8 machine I bet it still works.
