I've been diagnosed with a heart ailment and my doctors advice to me is to quit smoking, but still too hard for me to quit. Somehow I managed to lessen smoking from 1 pack to 5 to 10 sticks a day. are there any of you guys succeeded to quit smoking and how You did it?

You are clearly not sufficiently frightened by your heart condition that giving up has become an imperative. Ask your doctor if you can spend a day on the cardiac unit if your local hospital. See for yourself the people whose lifestyles have caught up with them and who are now seeing their lives close through their lack of willpower to stop whatever it was that brought about their condition. I am sorry about your ailment, but in my experience it takes a major life changing experience to make us reform our ways! I have been there and do not want to return!

p1ke....I don't think willpower has a thing to do with it. You can have all the willpower in the world and still not get over a physical addiction without major help. I've been there too and my willpower was sufficient to move a mountain but the dam.n.ed thing didn't move.

Ah but YoYo...if you don't have the willpower in the first place then you are on a hiding to nothing. It's too easy to say "I can't".... I used to smoke 20 a day and I was placed in a position of giving up something that I loved or stopping smoking. I stopped! Try hypnotism.. try anything..but it has to come from deep within you or you might as well not bother.

I think it should be really something that you need to do on your own by conditioning your mind that it is unhealthy and it adds up to your daily expenses as well. I am also a smoker and slowly I was able to cut down from 10 sticks a day to 1-2 in a day. But when I was pregnant, I totally stopped smoking for about a year. But then I get tempted again coz I see my husband smoking too. I try to lessen it one day at a time. Just a strong will power is what we both need.

It is absolutely the most difficult thing that I've ever tried to do. I have quit smoking three times now. I had to use the patches faithfully. I even strung them out longer than the recommended amount of time. I got down to the weakest patch, had to go back to step two and stretched out that time then back to step three. I still keep some on hand for when the craving gets tough. It's gotta be a sincere and lifelong commitment.

Although quitting smoking can be quite hard, it is something that you have to do if you're wanting to live your life to the full potential. You already know just how bad for you smoking can be because you have got this news, and you should be proud of the changes that you have managed to make so far. If you have managed to cut back this far, then it isn't all that much to cut back another stick at day, and then eventually you won't be having one every day; possibly every two days or something like that. You will soon find that you don't need to smoke, and that the knowledge that you would be able to live a healthy life is worth much more than being able to put a stick into your mouth.

a pleasant day jaraan, indeed it is hard to quit that habit especially if you are long time smoker. however, if you are really have the drive to stop, then you will do a lot of ways to lessen it.

my 2 elder brothers succeeded in quitting smoking as there are really bad side effects it can do to your heart and lungs. The other started to quit smoking gradually and the other one was able to quit smoking by decision he just stopped it at all.

I strongly suggest you quiting smoke. My grandfather is a chain smoker. He smoke like you as before. With time flies, smoking will make you worse and worse. You can try to do more exercise. What's more you can find some substitutions to distract your focus on smoking. Hope you will succeed in quiting it.
