How to recover folders turned into files on windows 7

I had some folders on my external hard drive and for some reason or another they have been turned into unknown files and I can't access them either. I've tried some type anti virus and it didn't do the job, any help?

try using kaspersky antivirus, if it doesn't help then you might have lost your files just get a new windows installed
