Is taking a Shower at Night is a Bad Habit?

Philippines

My boyfriend used to scold me for taking shower late at night. He said that I don't know how to take good care of myself. And he even said that it's a bad habit. But I still keep doing it. Because I want myself to be clean and feel fresh before going to bed. :)

Some people say that it is a bad idea to take a shower right before you go to bed, maybe it is something like that your boyfriend has heard. Have you asked him why he thinks that it is a bad habit to take a shower at night? I mean in which ways does he think that it is going to harm you? Like I said, I have heard before that some people believe that it is bad for you to take a shower at night, but personally I don't agree with them. I do it myself and I have never experienced any problems because of that. I think that it is nice to take a shower before bed, because I don't have to rush at night and in morning I only have time for a quick shower before I leave the house.

Are there any problems doing it? I think there is none...you are just being hygienic towards yourself and that it is not a problem I think...

What's wrong with cleaning your body of all the dirt, smell etc from a long day and go to bed clean? I mean..if you dont, then you take all the body odors, smells, dirt etc to bed with you...and that all gets rubbed off you onto the sheets and blankets...then you get up in the AM and shower them off you, but they are still in the bed and sheets...and the sheets lay there all day holding the smells and dirt..and then you get back into bed the next night and take all the daily odors and grim to bed with out...and you are now in bed with grim from today AND yesterday..and you wallow in them all night..then you shower them off the next morning, but they are still there in the sheets/bed..and on it goes until you change your sheets. I don't want to sleep with todays body odor and grim, muchless tomorrows and the next day and the next day! Why did he say it was a "bad habit"?

I agree with you. Plus I find that if I do not take a shower at night it is harder to fall asleep. Personally, I find just the relaxation of a shower a requirement at the end of a long day.

Everyone has their own way of doing things(one thing I would tell him)and taking your shower at night isn't bad for you. Unless you live in a dapt place or something. I think he just wants to feel like he is in power and has it over you. Sad. Is he opinionated in other areas of your life?

Yes, telling him I appreciate his concern; although, you know that this is a good habit for your body because it helps you to feel good about yourself to go to bed clean and refreshed is all good.

Maybe you should tell him something like you appreciate his concern; although, you know that this is a good habit for your body because it helps you to feel good about yourself to go to bed clean and refreshed. Ask him to explain why he feels it is a bad habit. Maybe it is just one of those issues where if you both communicate that you can both gain insight into each others perspective.

It's also my habit to take shower every night. I can't sleep without taking a shower everynight, sometimes I even took a bath especially when the weather is too hot (summer time) It's so relaxing and refreshing to sleep after a cold shower when it's summer. And a hot bath during cold weather gives me a good night as well. I never see anything wrong it...or maybe it all depends on each individual, maybe they are not used to it.

I think it depends on the temperature of the water, duration of the shower and most of all your physical status at that moment. I mean, are you totally physically exhausted like from a work-out or lengthy travel? or just simply want to get a good shower before bed. Anyway, I think there is nothing wrong, as long as you have it in moderation, hence make sure that it would be a brief shower unlike the ones you take during the morning. Also, once you feel something wrong, quickly stop showering. I remember one time, though it's an isolated case on my part. I took a shower, but I can't exactly remember if it was at noon or afternoon, I suddenly felt a weird but scary pain on the back of the neck after a few minutes under the cold shower. I really was scared because I thought I was like having a mild stroke so I quickly stop the shower and prayed to GOD because I was really panicking because the pain was totally something new and scary, it felt like some veins will burst. I just remember, that before I took that shower, I was really sweating a bit because of the hot temperature inside my room, well in our room at the boarding house.

I really do not think that there is a problem with the temperature. Actually studies have shown that taking a hot shower then the act of getting out the shower, and getting dressed or ready for bed cause a change in body temperature that actually helps make you sleepy. The result is that you can fall asleep easier and get a better night's sleep.

The only drawback that I can see is that if you are taking multiple showers a day would be perhaps having a high monthly water bill to pay. In the summertime especially, I know that many times you just need to shower to cool off and get clean especially after running errands in the heat. I agree with you, I do not see how taking showers is a bad habit.

I don't think having the bath at night is a bad habit. Actually here most people have the shower at night. As usually we don't want to wake up early to have the bath and we don't even have time for it. We will prepare for the breakfast and then go to work or go to school.

From research that I have read online, it is a good habit to take a shower at night. It helps you to fall asleep. It part of good sleep hygene. Another article I read suggested it as a good time management technique that taking a shower at night will help you save time in the morning, so that your morning routine goes more smoothly.

It depends.. if you are really tired and you still take a shower, then it is totally bad for your body.. But if you take a rest and then shower.. i guess it's okay.

I don't think so. I never skipped taking shower at night. It's so refreshing especially when your day is so tiring and you're all messed up with the heat and sweat and all the dirt outside. I think there's nothing wrong with that. Maybe you should scold him for not taking a shower.

Each of us people have different body nature and some of us people like me and you get adjusted while bathing during night time but some do not. Bathing during night time will cause to have fever quickly and along with small ear pains. If you do not find any problem while bathing in night time you can continue with it.

I think there's nothing wrong in taking shower late at night because i usually do that every night. The feeling was great when i take shower before going to sleep and help me to sleep well. The only thing that i see here that if you take shower too long late at night you might catch colds.

I agree taking a shower late at night is a nice way to relax and unwind from the day. I live in Arizona, so there is never any risk of catching a cold. In the summer months, it is really a requirement to take a shower at the end of the day because with 100+ degree temperatures you get all hot and sweaty throughout the day. I do not know anyone who wants to go to bed feeling all hot and sweaty.

I don't see anything wrong with it. I do it from time to time depending on my schedule. Plus then my hair can dry and Zip don't have to spend so much time drying it with the hair dryer in the morning.

The only downside to that is that if you go to bed right after taking a shower with wet hair is that sometimes it will dry funny depending upon how you sleep on it. I do tend to like to let my hair air dry, but if I wash it in the evenight I generally have to plan to let it dry before going to bed so I do not wake up with crazy looking hair the next morning.

Yeah I haven't heard anything like that. I have heard that you shouldn't take a showers or baths before going out right away in the weather. I too feel the same way about taking a shower before going to bed.

I don't see anything wrong with showering before bed. The only reason I don't do that is because my hair would not be easy to manage if I did. I prefer taking a shower in the morning where my hair will be easy to work with and look nice all day. =) I don't really see why your boyfriend thinks it is such an issue.

Perhaps he is against you doing it because you might just be too tired the whole day and you are taking a bath right away. It is not really a good practice. Don't get him wrong. He just cares for you because he loves you and wants to stay with you longer. Maybe you could adjust the time and make sure that you have taken enough rest before taking a shower. Have a nice day!

My granda also used to scold me when I do this. Like you, it has been my habit to take a warm shower before going to bed. I can always blow dry my hair anyway. She said it will lessen my blood, I will catch colds, and my sight will get blurry. I think it's just an old belief. I did ask our family doctor about this once and he said he himself takes a shower before bedtime and there's nothing wrong with it.

Maybe it is just one of those old wives tales that you should not take a shower late at night just like often you hear people say that if you go to bed with wet hair you will catch a cold.
