Are Non vegetarian eaters split personalities?

Non Vegetarians kill animals, cook their flesh and eat. So, does it mean that all non veg eaters are heartless? It can't be. But, how can a man who eats the flesh of a goat, pity at a goat if it gets killed in a road accident? Are non veg eaters split personalities?!
