Jack cat, a new arrival in our house, has been throwing up almost every day. But finally we found the reason, he threw up what looked like a string, but on closer inspection was a tape worm. Poor guy no wonder his tummy is upset, I put him on cat wormer and will take him to the Vet's if it doesn't cure him. It's my understanding that tape worms come from fleas and since he was a stray the first thing I did was deflea and tick him. He has gained weight and is playing now instead of just sleeping. I think he will be fine. Any experience with these worms?

I have not had any experience with tape worms, but for the longest time my kitty was not gaining any weight and was just like a butter ball literally only fat in the middle. It was scary. But I bought some worm meds for him and almost had to force it down his throat and needless to say I guess it worked cause he was soo much better after just that 1 dose. Hope you're Jack Cat gets to feeling better :)

Worms are a common nuisance cats and dogs. I have read that they come from fleas. I usually try to deworm mine once a year. Some vets want you to do it more than that. Where mine are inside I don't have to worry with it as much. I keep them as flealess as possible..lol. I am glad to hear that the kitty is gaining weight and feeling good now.

We make our own cat food. My wife puts diatomaceus (check spelling) earth in the food while making it and we don't seem to have that problem any longer.

We feed this to the Llamas and it seems to be effective. We hate giving them other worm meds, especially since these are made for sheep or cows and no one really knows how much damage they do to Llamas.

The only experience I can think of with that happening was a kitten or two I had gotten my Mother had bough the deworming stuff from the store. I don't know if they ever had worms or not or if she did it as a preventative? I hope Jack will be fine. You've already seen changes in his personality and that's a good sign right there for any living creature.

Thanks a ton for posting this discussion. Well thankfully u guys detected the issue on the right time otherwise the situation could have been more serious than before. I know cats generally take up everything that come their way and that was the reason you cat took that tape worm into her mouth. Now its great that it is fine and playing. I hope u take care of her so that she does not come with such an issue again. What say?

I have a hard time keeping two of our cats free from fleas, no matter what I use. I have had cats get the tiny segmented worms, cannot remember what they are called over the years, but I have only had one that had a tape worm. My last two cats have been strays. One I nearly killed with flea meds. The next one sneezed a lot and seemed to be not really healthy and a real young baby. Then one day he sneezed out what looked like a whole pile of spaghetti. Vet sent us wormer for all the cats and we have not had that type of worm since. Within the last year I have tried lots of flea remedies, including diatomaceous earth, but nothing really keeps the fleas off the two light colored cats and they seem to have flea allergies. On the other hand I understand that DE is used in cattle feed as a wormer and to keep down all kinds of parasites. I dust my cats with it, but I also make their food at home and i put it in it, along with brewer's yeast for the good nutrition. Oh, yeah, I remember. The worms my cats have gotten usually have been round worms. I definitely have not had any worm problems this year though, and I am glad.
