Tips on learning a new language

I'm taking up a basic Spanish language class in college and I'm looking for things to help me prepare. I already know basic expressions and numbers but I want to be exposed more to the "practical" side of learning this language. When I mean practical, I just don't want to learn how to say sentences that I'm never gonna use such as "My bag is color red." So what tips can you suggest? Read books? Find a speaker of the language? Flash cards? :D

Try to practice by talking in Spanish even if you're alone. It sounds crazy but we learn fast when we know how to pronounce the words. You can also try to learn at home through online sites. Livemocha is a great help if you want to learn languages. Good luck!

I think the best way to learn spanish is hearing it. Do you have any shows on tv there in spanish? A cartoon in spanish is a great way. As they seem to talk slower and show many pictures. Do a search online, there are many cartoons like on y- tube that would help you learn. Good luck, Buena suerte.
