I just got my pair of glasses last April 2012.. it was really fine using it as my eyes does not hurt. But lately i have been experiencing eye and head pains again. For some reasons i think this is due to my glasses.. i think it must have expired or something.. i have read somewhere that i need to have my eyes rechecked after 6 months and the glasses too.. but i am worried as it is a bit expensive given the type i use and because of my eyes too!! I am quite sad and worried. i guess i should get contacts too.. anyone knows anything about this?

Are you using a progressive one? I am using that special kind of eyeglasses for driving with UV protection. Yes, it is a must to have our eyes checked every 6 months, but not necessarily to change our lenses every 6 months. That depends on what our eyes needs - if it needs some upgrade or not. Take care of your eyes

Oh I just had a little giggle! Progressive glasses are those that change strength as you move your head up and down, something like continuously variable bifocals. I can't imagine driving in them. Do you have one of those nodding dogs in your car?

It's better if you have your eyes checked by an opthalmologist.. it might not be a case of increased grade but other issues like glaucoma.. You better have it checked this early otherwise if indeed you have it then even if you take medicines it might not be enough to cure it but rather your eye retina has been damaged which leads to total blindness.. one of the symptom of glaucoma is progressive increase in eye grade.. I know this because I have this..

Hi jazel.. glaucoma is a condition wherein you lose your veins- eye in the periphery thats why you are nearsighted because your veins in the periphery are not functioning anymore.. this is due to a blockage in the opening of the eye wherein water or liquid is being drained... there are two cases of of glaucoma .. open angle and close angle the latter is more dangerous while the other is manageable as long as you take the required medicines and that it is detected early so that interventions can be introduced.. it's good thing if this is detected early on so that you can save the other veins from being damaged but if this is detected at a later age then maybe 50-60% of your veins are already damaged and cannot be remedied anymore... This is scary!!

Thanks to this discussion, I now know something more about glasses and eye problems. I have been planning to get a pair of glasses, one that is particularly expensive because of the kind of lens and frame I want (I have the details in my discussion), but this discussion have made me realized that I might have to change lenses in a short amount of time, so I guess I'll have to go with the cheap ones as long as it serves the purpose well.

I asked my sister to check the prices of lenses and frames in Manila and from shops and doctors she knows there and the price range was not too different from here, which was not really a good news for me because that means I have to settle with cheap glasses first until I have a fixed eyes grade.

Ouch! That is sad... I need to check results of your last eye test, and would suggest you go for another one for sure.... Glasses as far as I know do not have any life span or shelf life. I would also suggest you check out the lighting at your office, home as I do know you read a lot and the lighting does play a role in eyesight.

Yes the lightning for some time now has been bothering me.. or well just me. i asked my officemates if they are bothered by it but they are not. so i cannot complain about it. There are just too much light for my opinion, its tooooo bright but they are fine with it, sometimes i could turn off one of the lights but they would then they would complain.. ugh.

Hi Jazel, There is no such concept of the expiry of an eye glass. The only problem could be a change in the eyesight power. It is advisable to do an eye check up once every year if you are above 21 years since the eyesight almost becomes constant at this age and there wont be a significant change in it afterwards. Probable reason for your problem could be the way you are wearing the glasses and also the angle in which it is put up. Sometimes if you are a fresher wearing a spectacle for the first time, then it would take sometime for you to get adjusted .

Hello Jazel, I remember being told to buy glasses since my far sight wasn't that good to begin with.It was that time when I was applying for a job and we were required to undergo medical examination. I still have glasses though not sure if i should have one again, maybe i will have my eyes check in a couple of months but I've been sleeping early just to compensate for the rest of my eyes

If these were your first glasses, then it isn't unusual for your eyes to change within a few months. You will probably need several different glasses for two or three years before your eyes settle to one particular pair. So, six monthly eye tests are very necessary. I would avoid contacts at this time.

i dont think eyeglasses expire. you only need to change hem if your grade gets higher. i used to change glasses every year but when i switched to contact lenses my eye grade stayed at -4.00 and it has been like that for more that 10 years now

hi, for me eye contacts lens is more good rather than eye glasses and also because of my co-worker who also experiencing that she bought a two pair of contact lens, and aside from that its more nice to use it because you need to put it once and remove it once too before you sleep.

It is an expensive... :( I had this problem when I first got my vision corrected. I was only able to wear glasses for a little less than a year because my vision kept getting worse, so I figured that I should just get contacts so that I could update the prescription more easily. It changed for about a year and a half, and I am finally consistent with my vision. I go back and forth between glasses and contacts, but I really prefer contacts. It doesn't feel like I'm wearing anything and I can see everything! One thing to note: I have another issue with my pituitary gland which might have prompted the vision change. If you are experiencing frequent changes in your vision and headaches, make sure that a doctor is aware of this. It might be nothing, but if it is a symptom of another issue, you want to be in good hands.
