right or wrong, or costs-benefit analysis when making life changing decisions

do you make decisions based on whether it is "right or wrong" or based on cost-benefits i.e whether the rewards will be higher than the costs or vice versa? i really want to know which could be better when making life changing decisions.

Definitely based on cost-benefits. Sometimes doing something wrong(illegal) seems benefitial for a well but cost much more finally.
