hello fellow mylotters. several days ago, i begin to feel some kind of lump at the base of my throat. there is a kind of a choking feeling from time to time. it's as if there was a big seed that i've swallowed and it won't go all the way down. i've checked this on the web. and i found out that this actually happens to some people. some say that they have been feeling this for some years already. the cause is not sure. there is some speculation that it is because of depression, anxiety, or stress. i wonder if i have been feeling these causes since i fail to notice it. yet i still have these choking feeling at my throat. does anybody here experience, or knowledge of, this type of discomfort? i'm be more than glad to learn something from you. btw, it's called globus hystericus from what i've seen. i'm not sure if this is the same ailment that i am feeling. but it is the closest that i got.

HI, murkie! I did experience that last year. At first I though I was just having a dry throat so I just kept on drinking lots of water. Then one night, I feel I was choking. I had difficulties swallowing my saliva. And it took about 2-3 second before I could finally swallow. There was just a feeling of breathlessness sometimes. But this usually happens when I was about to sleep. On the third night, I got really scared. I went to the ER and have it checked. And I was telling that there is some sort of grain of rice stuck on my throat and had difficulty in swallowing. I asked for an EENT. I even argued with the nurse coz she kept on insisting that I need to have a ECG to check on my heart. Then I said that there is nothing wrong with my heart. It was the throat that is in question. And so, what the EENT found out was my throat was red. There was nothing stuck on it. I was most likely having an allergy and was about to be sick with cough. So he what he prescribed to me was just an antihistamine. I took it for a week then it was gone. I think that it was stress-related coz I was pretty working too hard on my online job back then.

That was quite scary, jenny. Would it be good if murkie will just drink antihistamine? ...and not go to a doctor anymore? Hmmm, what else could be a possible remedy for stress? Have you tried any?

I think, Murkie still needs to see a doctor, just to be safe. Remedy for stress---- is to take it slow in anything that you do and not to worry so much about everything. Looks simple, right? But it takes a lot of mind conditioning before we are able to have that inner peace.

Take it slow in anything.. Not to worry so much about everything... Yup, they look so simple. But seriously, they're hard to do especially, the not to worry much about everything. Because nowadays, we seem to about everything, from simple to complicated. Did I say "we seem"... Okay, I seem.

It might be Globus hystericus...a condition mostly due psychological factors(anxiety, depression, sadness etc). Treatment would be keep yourself away from stress. But this is only part of the differential diagnosis. Many other conditons might lead to similar symptoms. It might also be a polyp, esophageal webs, spasm of muscles, inflammation of the throat or a even tumor! You should take it more seriously and pay a visit to your ENT surgeon,do an X-ray examination and an endoscopic examination to confirm the diagnosis.Get well soon Murkie!!

well, thanks a lot for the information. i too suspected its globus hystericus. but as the causes states that it is from stress or depression or anxiety, i have had my doubt. i don't feel stressed out or depressed. a little, maybe. but not the gravity that i could get sick to. but then again, even the blogs and articles that i've read weren't really too particular about its causes. so i guess there's something else. i'd probably get my throat checked, one of these days. my fiance will go with me, so i wouldn't be worried too much.

Thank you Adnileb!Anti stress pills are available dear!lol...Na best way to fight stress would be eat healthy, exercise and adopt a positive attitude.Yeah might be tumor(a mass)...hope a benign one though.Only a proper history and examination will rule out all the other possibilities. But Murkie if you elaborate more on your symptoms and a brief history maybe ill be able to make a differential diagnosis.

OMG!! Try to squeeze it or choke yourself hard. Later on, you will find out what it is that makes you feel uncomfortable. Okay, seriously, like what the others said, go to the doctor and have it checked.

haha! you see, all you other commenters! oops. anyway thanks for that optimistic view natliegleb. well, it may. or it may not. it's better for me to be careful and observe before i'll rule out that it's not some disease or something. of course, i still need to consider getting to a medical specialist, just as advice by evreybody else.

I think you should have an immediately check for a medical professional. Normally a swollen lymph nodes return to their normal size. Relax and see a doctor. Hope that everything will be fine. :)

It could be stress or it could be many other things. I think the best thing to do is just to go to the doctor. Have you gone yet. And I say don't work yourself up in a frenzy because of what you are reading on the internet. Because that could scare you even more. Anyways, I had something similar and I thought nothing of it as well. Until I got really sick one day. I always had this tightening in my throat or the feeling of something in my throat and would not go down. Then one day I just got really sick and had to go to the doctor. Come to find out I was having problems with my thyroid. So basically I have been getting treated for my thyroid to get it back on track and now things have gotten better and the feeling had gone away. I too had looked up things like you on the internet to see why I would have that feeling and the internet would tell me so many things and then it just freaked me out. There was even a point that I even thought that I had a tumor because that is what the internet said. I say you'll never know what it truly is until you take yourself to the doctor. It could be nothing at all, but if this is a concern to you and has you worrying then, better to go to the doctor for them to say its nothing at all then to not go to the doctor and it was something really serious. How long have you been having this feeling any way. I had the feeling in my throat for like 6 months and it just never went away.

thanks for sharing. right now i'm still observing what. i do not feel any particular pain yet. and i like to think it just minor. i don't trust doctors for this kind here from where i am. chances are, they know nothing about my case and they charge a fee for doing nothing. maybe if i go to the main city or maybe in my hometown, i'l l go visit a medical specialist. as for the internet, i did not encounter any grave disease with it yet. only the comments here in my discussion did i hear about tumors and whatnot.. anyway. your experience is helpful for my case. and i hope you get well from your thyroid problems. hopefully i won't come to that.

Does it bother you? Does it give you pain when you eat or swallow? How long ago is this already? I am sure that it's just something that will go away when it subsides. I hope you will be able to find some medication for it.
