This is beetroot (see picture). Who is familiar with this? Is beetroot a fruit? vegetable? Is it edible? How is it prepared for human consumption? Where on earth is this plant found? Please contribute to the discussion.

I love beetroot, espically cooked cold with my salads every night. It is also very good for you as it has lots of iron in it. BUT... if you eat too much it doesn't actually do any harm to you but it can turn your wee red. I buy uncooked beetroot and just wash it, boil it and then peel it, it is nice hot as well. People pickle it to make it last longer. Hope this helps you my dear friend

We do eat it in various forms. Largely we make it a spicy curry and add in our food. Apart from that, we grate it, add some salt and add very little lemon juice and make it a salad. We prepare sweet pudding (halwa) with Beetroot. Very few people, who donate blood take it in juice form. They believe that it will speed up the regeneration of blood in our body.

I have never tasted one myself. It is rare in our country; probably beetroot is raised in Laguna province or in the Mountain Provinces like Baguio which is very, very far from Samar. I learned it is medicinal and is a great medicine to treat patients with high blood pressure.
