Wikipedia looking for money?

I just checked something out on Wikipedia and there is a huge notice at the top of the page asking for donations because they say they are the #5 website in the world and are non-profit. They have employees to pay and I guess they don't have the money to do so. I very seldom use it and since there are other ways to find out information even if I could afford it I wouldn't donate to them. Someone started the business and should be able to pay their people. If not they should just shut down. Do you use Wiki? Would you donate if you could afford it?

They say they have a lot of employees which I find questionable because anyone can add whatever they want to.

If I'm using SEO I might check out what they have to say, but I don't persay..use them. I have found that some of their information is not correct, so I'm sort of skeptical. No, I couldn't afford to donate to them, nor would I. There are too many other places to find out information, as you mentioned. I guess some people start these little businesses without thinking of the consequences, which is unfortunate.....at least they tried.

Wiki has been around for years and I think everyone knows that they do not always have the correct information. I think they have a nerve looking for donations when there are so many places who need the money more than they do.

It's a little difficult for most people to donate nowadays. Even though wikipedia is for sure one of the most common visited websites of all time. It is a fact, however, that wikipedia's sources many times aren't exactly accurate, as some people already noted. This makes it less professional and doesn't allow you to use wiki's sources on school projects, etc. This is a huge con I believe when it comes to donating.

I use Wikipedia a lot but I haven't seen this yet. I would be glad to donate or share if I had that amount. I already tried helping other people and it felt very good, and it just brings me joy to help other people that are in need.

I don't know if I will feel guilty about this or not. When I was still a computer education teacher, in my about Internet Concepts, I usually discouraged my students to use wikipedia as their source in research. Yes, I know that wikipedia has a vast database of information however, the mere fact that anyone can just edit or add something there had been distracting me to question the validity of their information there. I suggested to my students that if they are going to be in need of a certain information, they need to go to trustworthy sites which directly explain or give information of what their research is. As when I check on their referrences submitted to me, I just give a point to wikipedia, while if the student used the direct source of information specifically if it is a research based site I gave 5 points.
