KAYA-bangan: A Pitfall of an Ineffective Leader

I attended a life enrichment seminar as part of our company requirement and there it was tackled the value of EXCELLENCE. We were talking about the IS and IS NOT of this value when the word KAYA-bangang came out as an example of the former. In Tagalog, "kaya" connotes a positive attitude to challenges that come your way. It has been a corporate value to stand up in the midst of adversity and continually challenge ourselves to go beyond what is expected of us. Needless to say, this comes with the guarantee to deliver on our commitments. Unfortunately, there are people (I'm referring to people in position) who commit to a deliverable without proper consultation from those who will do the work and in the process put the integrity and reliability of the organization at risk. This is false promise or KAYA-bangan! I have been taught that before committing to anything, there is a need to weigh if the existing logistics and manpower is enough to deliver as promised. That is part of the responsibility of a leader. A leader should not only think of himself. The thinking should always be as an organization. Sometimes there are instances that since "nagkasubuan na" a leader would demand a lot from his subordinates. Many times, this demand would mean working odd and unreasonable hours that may not even guarantee success. When this happens, the exercise becomes a waste of company resources and a potential issue for people unrest and attrition.

Well, sometimes, you have to take matters into your hands. Not all leaders /bosses are really good at their work and probably made contacts or bribes just to get the job. There are not made with the same quality and don’t expect anymore from your boss if he is lousy. Most of them are on constant ego-trip. Many people love the position because of the benefits and not the responsibilities of the said position.
