What is the use of affiliate link?

Recently, I got an affiliate link from a well known site to my log in page. The site asks me to become an affiliate to earn money. I too have posted the link in facebook without any knowledge about it. So, I want to know the use of affiliate link , even though I know it is to promote the site, and what is the use of posting it? What would I get If someone clicks the link and watch the site. How would I know if someone click my link? Also, tell me the ways to promote the link and the exact sites on which I can post this link

Different sites have varying rates if someone signs up under your name. You will be notified either through your email or to that particular site if someone did sign up.

The use of affiliate link is to get referrals/downline/team which will help you to earn more money. More people you refer to some program, more money will they make for you. It is very hard to get referrals, and it is even harder to get active referrals. So if you trust in business you are promoting (for example - myLot), then try to invite family and friends...
