Is buying Christmas Prezzies For Your Pets Just A Bit Weird?

December 20, 2012 3:55pm CST
I am not a pet lover - we do not have one at home because I don't want one. The children and the good lady have outnumbered me in the past and we have had animals in the house... It always ends the same, me outside in the rain picking up beastie POOP. Any responsibilty that the kids had towards this animal is now passed to me. That is then the point I move the pet on to a family that will give it the attention and love that I will not.... So back to my original point. Buying pets christmas presents does seem a little strange to me. Dogs don't understand what Christmas is, so why would they be pleased or grateful to receive a gift at Christmas? Do they say thank you? No, never. All animals are the same at Christmas - self self self. You know these beasties are selfish and lack the gratitude, because they never get you a gift in return. Not so much as a Christmas card. Just think of that when you are spending that hard earned money on a present for your pet

Whenever I have a pet I always get it/them a Christmas present. This year I replaced all my cats toys with new ones in one of those little stockings that only cost $1. My cats aren't selfish and they do love their new presents becauses their not all chewed up the way their old ones were. I bet you don't like people who dress up their animals either....lol....

An animal has a coat - why would it need clothes?

For some people, their pets are the only family they have. Why not include them. For another thing, if that dog has a new bone to chew on he or she is more apt to leave the boxes and paper and ribbons alone that are scattered about as you open your gifts. And yes, I put coats and sweaters on my two little dogs. They are more susceptable to the elements. What do I get from my pets, unconditional love. They make me laugh and smile. They know when you are sick or upset and will come lay by you out of concern. I think that's an amazing gift.

I have given a gift to one of the dogs we had year ago. It was a little chewing toy for him. He was a small puppy and he was a Husky. A good looking dog. I did it as a goof. Of course dogs do not understand what christmas is. And I do think it is odd to give them gifts when in fact all dog owners continuously give to their pets. Animals are needy and do need lots of love and attention. I like dogs, but I am not going to walk it or feed it or clean up after it. Thats why I do not have a dog. I like it the way it is now. My mother has a dog and all I have to do is pet him once in a while. And lets face it, pets of any kind cost lots of money. I think they should breed a pet that is programed to give instead of receive.

I can see maybe getting your pet something nice, a treat to eat, a toy... but specifically for christmas? No, that is just... dumb.

It sounds no different and weird to buy prezzies or gifts for your pets in christmas , it is a nice adea. It will give you pleasure and also satisfaction that you have brought a present for your dog. Go ahead with the same.

There are people who enjoy doing this and so for them it is not weird. They feel like the unconditional love from their pets year round is enough thanks. I am not one of them, but that is okay. I do not buy presents for my pets, or clothes.I take good care of them though, as they cannot do it all themselves.

There are pet people and there are nonpet people, both have value, but often little understanding bewteen them. We are ranch people and animal are both inside and outside our home. The inside ones get nothing for holidays except maybe a bone if it's safe. They get enough excitement from the arrival of visitors. Outside animals also enjoy the arrival and if strange dogs are involved, remain on constant watch to make sure these stranger dogs stay within bounds. Llamas have learned that dogs are not to be trusted and will give a terrible warning call and be ready to attack any strange dog that comes within striking distance. All of this is plenty of stimulation for our four footed friends. The chickens don't care as long as they get fed, birds are more removed from the human world than the four footed animals. Me, I'm just glad when it's all over and the ranch returns to it's usual space in our lives. Blessings to all.

relax rob.. the responsibilities of the dog should not be yours, you should have agreed on that with your children and so they must keep it as their obligations. Do you know that children who are exposed to pets develop the sense of responsibilities and care for other people when they grow up. So having pet is ok, if you just press the idea that it is their responsibilities to walk and train the pet. Yes, I also give gift to my pet. LOL. crazy right? but I do, I like him unwrapping the gift. hahaha he is part of my family so he deserves to get one as others do.
