Tell me about yourself.

A common question during an interview. I still don't have any idea what would be my best answer. My first interview will be this last week of January. I'm a fresh graduate and I want to have this job.

Ugh, I dislike this question so much, because there is so much about "Me." Now I know what they are looking for, personality traits, jobs I've had previously, etc..They really don't need or want to hear about my family. They don't need to know I have six kids, whether I am married or divorced and whether or not I had coffee that morning. What could I say about me? I would say: My full name is Linda, I like and prefer to be referred to as Lynn. I graduated with my bs degree in Elementary Education. I have a major in child development and I have a minor in reading. I went to school for five years, and commuted 126 miles one way to achieve this goal. I have worked with state funded head start programs and I have worked in child care centers. I enjoy kids and working with kids. I have held several positions within those centers starting at the bottom and working my way up. I was a preschool teacher for a year and a half before I went into the DIT program (Director in training). I have been a teacher, an assistant director, and a Director. Well, that's how some of the interview would go. I wouldn't want it to sound rehearsed, but it is a good idea to write that question down, because they always ask. And, well...you should know this about yourself and what you are passionate about. The goal is to tell as much about your "career" as you possibly can, without getting to personal. I know this, but interviews really make me nervous. You are trying to sell yourself, so sometimes you might come off as over-confident of "cocky." That's what I hate the most. I like a small interview, one on one, with another person. I don't like the idea of a round table interview because it makes me feel like I'm being attacked.

Thank you Mary, very nice of you to say. My teaching license lapsed in 2002, and I just haven't been able to get it re-instated. I won't be either. I home school my two youngest kids and will continue to do so. Right now I babysit and clean for my Uncle and earn a little online. I really want to complete my personal training certification and I have hopes and goals that it will finally be realized this year 2013.

Thanks a lot for the response. I really admire teachers. I admire you mam for your dedication in teaching elementary students. Yes, Everyone may tend to get nervous especially during an interview.. I just need some courage to sell myself better. Maybe a short description of my abilities may work but I have to think more techniques to make this perfect.

since you are a new graduate, and assuming you have no work experience yet, tell them your name, from where you are, tell them something interesting about you, and when it comes to things like hard work or taking up challenges then you can talk about your studies, anyway they will see in your records how well you are at school, and it counts.if you have basic knowledge in simple pc(microsoft) operations you can tell them that also or if you can type at the average that would be good too. just relax. some would ask you where will you see yourself 2-3 years from now, your plans for the future. and why would you jump start your career with them. make sure you know the company profile so that you can tell then why you are qualified to work with them.

thank you for that idea. Well I must first have a background of their company. I need to practice and be confident during the interview.

You have to know yourself, your skills, what you can do so that you can very well market yourself. You have to convince the interviewer that you can do the job and you are the perfect candidate for the position. You should be able to cite the reasons why.

This is a very common question when it comes to interview. I always prepare myself with these kind of questions. I make sure that I am confident on the way I deliver my answer. Some recruiter are not interested in my answer but just testing the way I will answer it. Just be confident and prepared.
