i used to work in a jail that was turned into a museum. my job was to research the history of the jail and the inmates. i came across a great story that i wanted to share. There was a man in jail in the 1800s that was a debtor. at that time there was no court yard for outside excessive. only trusted inmates and people who did not do serious crimes were allowed outside. there were these white posts in the ground that told them the boundaries of the yard. this gentleman was outside for his exercise and he had a great plan. he had a son at home who was very sick and dying and wanted to go see him to say goodbye. he picked up the post out of the ground and carried it in front of him all the way home and back again later on that afternoon. When he returned he was forced to go up and see the judge. he told the judge. the rule is not to pass the white posts. i technically did not pass it. it was in front of me the whole time. There are no records of any punishment so i guess he got away with it.

That's a great story. I think it would make a good movie. Sounds like something you would see in a movie like "oh brother where art thou".

That's a great story. I like the fact that he risked more punishment to be able to see his son. He sounds like he was not a criminal, just unlucky, maybe. The judge must have thought he was a good guy, as well, because he didn't get punished for it.

no he wasn't the typical criminal. he was in there for debt. back then you can go shopping at the general store and put it on your tab. well he couldn't afford to pay off his tab which is what landed him in jail for a few months.

That is an amazing story, and the guy did come back! ;) if he wasn't an honest man, I doubt he'd have come back.

Wow, that man was so smart, and it's touching that he will go to great lengths just to see his kid. He's also quite clever. I think the judge showed compassion to a grieving parent. It wasn't easy to see and be with your dying child.

That's a great story. Hope he got there to say goodbye to his son. I like what he told the judge. I wonder if the jucge found it as humorous as I did. Glad that it can't happen now a days. The jails have much better security. It would make a good story for a book.
