Artificial Intelligence and Animals?

Hello fellow mylotters. I do believe that some of our robots right now have artificial intelligence. And i am quite a little bit confused if some based it on some animal instincts. If so, how did people create machines with artificial intelligence based from animals? What animals did some scientists examine that has been the basis of artificial intelligence?
