The Jewelries in Ongpin

Philippines
February 22, 2013 7:42am CST
Just this month, my husband bought a gold necklace and pendant from Ongpin. That was her surprise gift for my birthday and Valentine's Day. My husband said that it was 18k Saudi gold (as indicated in the tag). But I didn't believe it was Saudi gold for the color of the neacklace and pendant look like Italian. To prove my doubt, this morning I went to two pawnshops and had my jewelry appraised. To my surprise, both pawnshops revealed that the jewerly was indeed an 18K Italy gold. If I am not mistaken, Italy gold is cheaper than Saudi or Chinese gold. I believe he paid much more than was worth the jewelry. Am I correct? or not?

well I don't know about the cost of the gold but I would be taking it back to the shop where it was bought with a written appraisal to prove that infact it is not the gold they claim and demand that they correct it

I hope I still can. I am not pretty sure if my husband kept the receipt. I will try to ask him if he still has the receipt.

I agree with you, Saudi gold has a high price than Italian gold and since your husband bought the jewelry in Ongpin there's a big possibility that he got cheat my the jewelry vendor. Ongpin is a very famous place in here Manila for jewelry but there are some store there who's taking advantage to their customer especially if your not familiar with the types/kinds of gold. Your husband is very sweet for giving you a precious gift and i think saudi or italian will be fine as long as it came from his heart.

Yeah, Saudi gold is much more expensive than Italian Gold. You are lucky to have those jewelries from Saudi.

Really? I didn't know that. I thought all gold are the same wherever they may come from. Since my dada used to be an OFW in Saudi, all the gold jewelries we have are from there and I don't think it is a big deal. Now I need to be even more appreciative of his gifts. I have lots of friends who go to Ongpin for their wedding rings because they say its cheap and genuine. I have never been there, to be honest because back in the Philippines, it is way too far from my folks' place in QC.

Your husband is very sweet for buying you a gold necklace and pendant for Valentine's Day... but it is sad that the gesture was ruined because of a not so honest store owner... there are so many of them out there so we the consumers always need to keep our guard up... You can always report the incident to the DTI... go back to the store and demand for an explanation... or return the item... but if you are a busy person... these options are too much of a hassle... let this be just a learning lesson for you... and all those who will read your discussion...

Thanks for the very nice advice. My husband is not so demonstrative when it comes to sweetness but he loves to surprise me always. I love such gestures.

A karat is the actual gold content of a particular piece of jewelry. Pure gold is 24 karats and an 18k piece means 18 parts or 75% of the mixture is gold and 6 parts or 25% is alloy (other metals) mixed with it which are commonly silver and copper. Gold prices is standard per karat irregardless of the source. Shades of a jewelry piece whether darker or lighter depends on the alloy used but mostly new jewelry items don't show the real shade as these are plated in gold plating solutions to make them more attractive.

gold is gold my friend and once it's appraised as 18 karats then that's it no matter where they came from. I think people got the wrong idea because certain countries with high standards produce consistent purity of gold as in the case of Saudi Arabia that produced mostly 18k . Singapore and China use to produce 22k although now they also make 18ks. Italy got that reputation in our country because there were lots of what they called "Italian chains" but not because it's made in Italy means they are all the same, you can rest now, if the pawn shop is an honest one and they say it's 18k, it's 18k in any language. You always pay more when you buy gold in the shop because it's a finished product and they sell you by the piece. If you want to buy it cheaper then you would have to buy in grams, learn current price of gold per gram/peso ( in the internet), learn converting cause the internet gives you dollars per troy oz.. Gold test kits are also cheap, the stone and nitric acid test perhaps you may also want to learn that, best luck in gold

Some unscrupulous stores in Ongpin would pass on a 16k for an 18k but there are also good and honest ones so it's important to buy from a reputable store, your husband bought 18k, the store said 18k, you had it appraised and it's really 18k then I think that's a good sign of an honest dealer. Yes always ask for an official receipt and warranty when purchasing

Last year, we also visited Ongpin to look for our wedding ring. All the stores look like tiange so I began to hesitate from buying from any of the shops there. I searched the internet for reliable shops in Ongpin and I found one, we went there and found out that the pieces of jewelry they were selling were all very pricey. Indeed, the prices of their jewelry were far expensive than all the other shops. I concluded that most if not all shops there are selling fake jewelry.

Hi Donatello! May I know the name of the store? I will be going there this summer to buy new pieces of jewelries for my buy and sell business. Thanks.

I do not know about the differences in gold types... but i would have asked the value of the necklace from the appraisers as well. In addition to this i would have probably asked my husband to go back and return it or replace it with what should be the correct type of necklace. Its really hard to trust these jewelers in ongpin. Mom said if they know you are not familiar with the gold they would really try to con you. I wish you good luck on this.

saudi gold or italy gold you should tell that to your husband so he can go back to store where he bought it and ask for a replacement or refund.most stores in ongpin are not like they used to be before.a lot of them now are liars that will tell you their jewerlies are of high quality but really not.

What about Philippine gold? Just like those that are mined from fields in Paracale, Camarines Norte. I heard they have the best in the world, am I right? The best, but not yet developed. Right?

How thoughtful your husband is, but the thought that he had been cheated bothers me.The jewelry store told your husband that what he bought is indeed was a Saudi gold, and since your are knowledgeable with regards to gold, you have decided to have it appraised.I just hope your husband still kept the receipt if in case you decided to have it returned or take the difference from what he had paid.

I do believe that Italian gold is cheaper. He should have bought the jewelry from a more known shop than from those shops. You know how many people could be taking advantage over customers.

your husband is very sweet and thoughtful for taking time to buy you a gift for Valentine's day. I think that if I were you I would first tell him that I appreciate much what he did and no matter what kind of gold or whatever it is that he gives me it is the thought that really counts. but still I would inform him that he was kind of duped with the gold

Thanks for sharing this. I am sorry to hear that Ongpin jewelries are not really Saudi Gold. I think Saudi Gold cost more than Italy Gold thus I think your husband had paid more with what he bought. I think the store owners are cheating! My husband is planning to buy necklace too there in Ongpin as a gift to himself but I am having second thoughts now. Maybe it is much okay to buy is clearance (subasta) sale in pawnshops.
