Ah just thought of creating this discussion dedicated to the Unique Filipino Delicacies (Kakanin). On my List are the following: Bibingka - I super love this kakanin, it is made of grinded rice, and cooked in coal right? What makes this special is the salted egg and the coconut and butter on top of it. =) There is also the Cassava - This is my personal favorite, that being i love the toasted sweet at the top of the cassava, especially if it is topped with cheese that melts! oh its really very yummy. Puto Bumbong - the famous violet cooked in front of you! he he well this is common during Christmas but some still do prepare them and sell them on a regular basis. Binatog - or the white corn! This is yummy with coconut shavings and some salt and butter. I am not sure if it is kakanin but i think it is so i included it on my list. Biko - my mom's favorite! =) Puto and Kutsinta - the very famous puto, now made with different flavors too, i even saw there's a veggie that has carrots in it. he he I can think of a lot of them available and well I have my few favorites as well. What is yours?

i john! =) i think since they are of native "nature" it should belong. I have heard lapaz batchoy's are the best! =) i haven't tasted on here though that is at par with the ones offered in the provinces. :D Are you from isabela?! my boyfriend is from there and i have already tasted tupig/tupic. =) it is really nice its similar to suman but it has a smoky taste to it, and its not bland and you do not need to put sugar in it too. =)

hello chiyosan! my number one favorite pinoy native kakanin is cassava cake from Goldilocks. i only buy cassava cake from Goldilocks cause i know its cooked right and safe and it taste super delicious. next is palitaw and pinato cause i love peanuts.
@chiyosan (30184)

Is Pinato similar to peanut brittle? I agree with you that goldilocks cook such kakanin clean. Others are dangerous and one should be careful in biting from those sold in the market. Especially now there were a lot of news about people getting food poisoned from eating cassava cakes bought in the streets.

Hi there. I do love some peanut brittle once in a while hehe and yes I agree with you that it can be too sugary at times. That's true. I agree often some food bought in the streets may have been prepared unclean.

peanut brittle has lots of caramelized sugar and only a few peanuts and is very hard to chew but pinato is purely candied peanuts formed in a bar and is not very hard to chew. yes i agree with you about not buying cassava cakes sold in the streets...very unsafe.

I love Suman that is not made of rice, I dont know but I kinda like these "ricecakes" that is not made of rice. I love Cassava, Plantain (saba) and Millet(bird seed) suman. Buko Pie- whenever I get to Laguna, this is the first thing That I look for. I love the crispy outside and creamy inside. I am also a fan of Maja Blanka, It is such a simple recipe but its phenomenal. My neighbor have the best Maja blanka, they add pineapple juice on it.

I haven't tasted a bird seed Suman. I am curious about what it tastes I like buko pies too. I especially like those with crunchy crust. Some pies with yummy crusts make the pie all the better. That is new to me, a maja blanca with pineapple juice!

Is this true? Oh I am so envious... We live in a huge city and usually there are business establishments around and there aren't any person selling yummy kakanin. I would really love to try different each day. It's very cheap and it keeps your stomach full for a long time. Hehe

did you know the boiled condense milk? when its done its look like a yema and taste like yema too, so we call it here a yema :) in our place NCR there are lots of vendors every morning selling different kinds of pinoy delicacies. if you buy a kutyinta they coat a yema on the top and put some grated coconut.. you can buy it for only 4 peso each.. it solves my day :)

I love your discussion. I like all the native delicacies that you've mentioned. If available I would eat them all in one seating. But since you're asking -- my favorites are puto and kutsinta. I must have them every Sunday. And my mom makes sure I have it either for breakfast or snack.

Oh my God, with the replies, i realize there are really a lot of food offerings our country has that is unique to us alone. The Kumbo in your dialect is called Maruya here in manila. Its rarely that i see them now. =( my mom loves fried saba banana and she craves for it but i could not find anywhere where to buy it. he he ginataang bilo bilo is good for afternoon snacks! =) i love this dish if it has a lot of sago in it. ;)

I like the puto bumbong a lot it's color, texture and flavor when mixed with grated coconut and margarine. Sad thing is, I just see it during Christmas time and sometimes it's hard to find. Puto and kutsinta combination is the best. What I love to do is maja blanca and I also like the simple palitaw with sesame seed.

Oh right!!! i forgot about Maja blanca. this is a good stuff especially if there's cheese. he he i just love everything with cheese in it! im such a weird person. But I do hop eyou agree that puto with cheese is tasty and good as merienda. =) I also forgot about the Palitaw with sesame seeds and coconut shavings! :D he he i was taught how to make them by my mom's friend (she is lola lucing, god bless her soul) she toasts the seeds before putting it on the sugar and mix it. =)

my favorite is kutsinta with nyog! :)especially when it is home made by Lola. it served me for years as breakfast for almost everyday when i was in elementary. It is just sad that as time passed and due to my lifestyle change, food included, i almost forgot this sweet simple food i am used to crave back then.

oh wow i love this orange cute little things hehe they are like a bred but with gelatinuos texture. my mom does not know any delicacies and never cooks any for us. she also knows how to cook guinatan but that is just it. hehe i would only end up eating the bilo-bilo because i do not like the camote and the saging in my guinatan hahaha :D

my Lola makes sticky kutsinta and that's my favorite! :) I definitely agree on bilobilo, most of the time our mom just cook guinataang bilo bilo rather than guinataang halo halo as she really knows aside that all ingredients (aside from bilo bilo) will just be put on every side of our soup bowls. :)

My favorite would have to be my grandma's rice cake that she cooks during All Soul's Day. She cooks glutinous rice wrapped in banana leaves, then tied them together in two's with a plastic straw string. Then she makes this really sweet coco jam fresh from their own coconut trees in their small plantation. Oooh, now I'm craving for them, but it will take a while before I can taste them again.

wow! raine! home made are the best delicacies. mass produced ones lose those essential tastes of making the traditional ones, right?! =) i sure hope that i would be able to learn a few... i remember when a friend of my mom would create Ube Jam too. they are hard to make but really worth the effort. he he
