Is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu really a superior martial art or is it all just hype?

Back in the 90s everyone was shocked when Royce Gracie was beating everyone in the Ultimate Fighting Championship, and then everyone went MMA, mixing jiu jitsu and kick boxing. Now everyone seems to think you have to have some grappling training. Is this true or can you defend yourself with kicks and punches? Chuck Liddel is able to knock people out with kicks and punches. Also, in a street fight where you have to be quick and maybe deal with more than one person, is it realistic to use grappling or are you better off striking and getting the job done quicker and being free and not tied up with one guy?

Grappling is indeed a great for sports and even to defend yourself in a fight. But I dont think it is effective for multiple opponents. Yes, it is true that we can defend ourselves with kicks and punches. In jiujitsu you really have move quickly to catch your opponent and take him down or lock him,but what if the enemy is much more bigger? I had a little jiujitsu lesson, but I didnt manage to escape when my nephew sat in my stomach, He is fat and so heavy that i cant afford to lift my body even a little to do some tricks to escape. So I think i will just stick to striking and kicking. You only have to be smarter and should have some vital targets.

I think it depends on the situation because if you are fighting a many numbers of opponent in the street using jiu jitsu alone it won't work. In my own opinion it is better to learn or use mui thai in that situation. but I guest if one on one combat jiu jitsu is good.
