Linux is good, if you want to break away from constantly having to shell out $ every few years for a new OS, software, etc. There's lots of freeware/open source, so if you want some decent stuff, and not to spend a fortune, it's a good alt. There's also small distros, like DSL, that are good for old machines, as it doesn't need much power to run.

The reason I use linux is mostly because I have fun tinkering and making the operating system do exactly what I want it to do. A big reason people use linux is because most distributions don't cost any money. Any task that can be done in other operating systems can be performed in linux. A big reason people don't use linux is that there are some applications that are not made for it, such as microsoft office or adobe photoshop. There are good alternatives to these programs. Libre Office has most of the features as ms office and The Gimp has much of the functionality of Photoshop. What I recommend is that if you do not have one of these "must have" programs that you have to use, give linux a try.
