Paying it Forward May Cause Some to Back Up

Recently someone asked me if I knew someone who drove a certain vehicle. No one came to mind, so I asked why they wanted to know? They said because they were recently in the drive thru and someone in front of them paid for their meal. When they pulled up to the window to pay, they were informed that the car in front of them took care of it. While they were thankful to the person, they figured that it had to be someone they knew. Therefore, they were asking everyone if they knew someone who drove that make and model of vehicle. I asked if they thought that it would have just been a stranger wanting to "pay it forward"? They said "no, why would someone do that?" I thought, how sad it is that we live in a society that we now question why anyone would be nice. I have always tried to go out of my way to do things for others, even if it is opening the door for someone, or leaving an extra tip for a waitress. I encouraged them to just do something nice for someone unexpected and see what it is like to give without restriction. My hope is they will.
