Here are some great tips for washing your own home windows: First of all, start by wiping really dirty windows down with a dampened cloth. If there is a great deal of dirt, do not just rub the window because it can cause scratches on the glass. Instead, use a vacuum cleaner attachment to get rid of any excess dirt. Use a clean cloth or sponge to get the window wet, but do not flood it with water. You can use cotton cloths like socks and even an old t-shirt. Micro-fiber cloths are great for washing windows. Simply read the instructions and avoid using fabric softener on micro-fiber towels or cloths because it can reduce their absorbency. For great results, use a squeegee. When you are using a squeegee be sure to let about one inch of the rubber end press against the glass by keeping it at a tilted angle. Doing this will eliminate drips from running down the window and causing streaks. Be sure to wipe the rubber blade on the squeegee with a dampened cloth every time. If the blade is dry it will skip on the glass. Position the squeegee horizontally (or side to side) on the window and pull it downward making sure it goes over the clean dry area every time. Keep doing this until the entire window is completed. When you are finished, wipe the windowsill off. A paper or cloth can be used as well, just be sure to always use strokes that overlap to make sure that you do not miss any part of the window. When you clean your windows, do not do it when there is direct sunlight. The heat from the sun can cause the windows to dry too quickly and end up with unwanted streaks. Be sure to rinse and change the water often while you are washing windows. Also, when you are washing exterior windows, you should always hose them down first to remove any grime or grease. You may scrub outside screens with warm water and then rinse them with clean water. Keep in mind that squeegees will not work on stained glass or textured windows -
