At one time, if you were to purchase something from a store, you would have to travel there and use your cash to obtain the item. In 1890, credit cards were given to customers of hotels and oil companies to use exclusively at their establishments. Credit cards evolved into being accepted at most stores in the world. In 1979, E-Commerce started as what we know today as online shopping by Michael Aldrich. Establishments quickly realized the value of people shopping from the comfort of their home. They also realized that the consumer will spend more money when they shop online versus at a brick and mortar store. There are two types of E-Commerce in existence. One is Business to business (B2B) and Business to consumer (B2C). Business to business (B2B) happens when companies trade information with one another. Business to consumer (B2C) happens when a business deals directly with a consumer. This is what people traditionally deal with when they buy items online. In 1994, Pizza Hut became one of the first companies to utilize online ordering for their customers. It was called the "Electronic Storefront" and very basic compared to online pizza ordering of the current day, but they paved the way and now are leaders in the pizza industry. There is a reason why you see pizza shops and other companies like them giving away free pizzas when you order online. Customers tend to buy more when they shop online rather than face-to-face. In 1995, Amazon launched Amazon Books. It took the company until 2003 until it was able to turn a profit. This mean that E-Commerce isn't always an overnight success and sometimes a company needs to tweak itself in order to satisfy the customer. Another company started in 1995. Have you ever heard of e-bay? Started as AuctionWeb , it is arguably the most successful of the E-Commerce stores. The company's first customer bought a broker laser pointer for $14.83. e-bay is worth $60 billion dollars. The Census Bureau of the Department of Commerce released the statistics saying the fourth quarter of 2013 saw 69.2 billion dollars in sales from E-Commerce. The days of walking into a store and paying with cash or check are dwindling and using your debit and credit card is becoming the normal. This doesn't mean that E-Commerce is for everyone. Plenty of small businesses still haven't given in to the E-Commerce takeover and rely on the traditional methods of cash and check. If you are looking to expand your business and want to go to the next level, E-Commerce might be the way to go. It's worked for many small and large businesses alike. The influence of E-Commerce on business has been a positive one and companies are always evolving and planning ways for you to part with your money.
