Why house breaking is so easy in USA criminal TV play?

In USA, suburb houses seem easily be broken, their windows and doors have not enough protection, such like metal net or something. Thieves and murderers just need to break the grass of the windows or doors and then unlock the locks by stretching their hands through the broken windows or doors.
It that true in reality?
