Running a business is full of highs and lows. One day, a significant increase in sales can make you feel like you’re on the top of the world. Another day a customer might write you a scolding email saying that he thinks you’re business is awful, and as a result, you just want to go back to bed. The emotional highs are one of the reasons that entrepreneurship is so compelling. It’s a stark contrast to many jobs that make employees feel like a zombie. There’s no emotion or passion - just the monotony of the 9 to 5. Entrepreneurship is different. However, bad emotions can make an entrepreneur's life miserable. In my practice as a business coach in Ohio, I see tons of entrepreneurs with this problem. It can make running a business stressful and painful. Emotional pain can even cause entrepreneurs to forget why they got into business in the first place and close up shop. Become healthy Entrepreneurs often work harder than the average employee. Of course, the work is more enjoyable, and entrepreneurs see the fruits of their labor first-hand. As a result, many are obsessed with working - to the point that their health suffers. Simple things like not eating enough food, eating unhealthy food (which is often preferred by entrepreneurs simple because it’s quick to make), and not getting enough sleep can easily make you respond negatively to small problems. Getting your health in order will help you gain a better control on your brain power, emotions and overall ability to perform. Reframe the situation It’s easy to let negative emotions take over - especially when the success or failure or your business is important to you. When a problem arises, or your business isn’t doing as well, it’s important to put things in perspective. When you feel negative, understand that it will pass. Entrepreneurship has its highs and its lows. As long as you do what you need to do, the problem will pass. Remind yourself that you will probably forget about the problem or negative review in a few days or a week.
