RAGGING

Ragging has been redefined nowadays. Some says its a necessary evil. But its important to realize the boundaries of ragging. It has changed from interactive discussions between seniors and juniors to physical and mental torture of the juniors by the seniors. The later try every possible way to kill the self respect of the former. Ragging, in short, has become a serious crime. What is needed is to make the new comers comfortable, but what is being done is quite the opposite.

Ragging is banned in India after some very serious offences committed by the seniors in some colleges.

If I understand the term of ragging, here it means to nag, to nagging maybe it is the same friend. Yes, it is terrible to torture someone with the repeated put downs and bossing and incessant going on forever..it can lead to someone doing harm to themselves if they feel they cannot live up to the standard of the elder one. I have seen many bad things happen to juniors as you say because of this bad thing.

Yes, exactly. Many lives have been destroyed in my country because of this.

@TiarasOceanView - It is not nagging exactly. In a normal of a professional college, seniors just pull up legs of freshers and sometimes that pulling up of legs takes an ugly turn. This is what we call 'ragging' here.

Hello! Nice post. Yes, you are right that despite anti-ragging ban, ragging goes on unabashedly in some of the professional colleges here in India. I understand though, since the Supreme Court Ruling came, its severity has gone down. You are right that freshers should be welcomed and they should be treated nicely so as to feel comfortable in the new (college) environment. I think if a fresher goes to a college and if his legs are pulled up in a lighter vein and in fun, he should take it sportingly and should not mind. However, if seniors resort to some physical torture to a fresher, the fresher should immediately report to the college authorities. Anti ragging law could lend the seniors in trouble, if applied, in such circumstances.

@phoonk - If a person (read a fresher) does not report due to lack of fear, it emboldens the seniors to pull up his legs more. The law is very strict, if a junior complains about ragging then the senior will be in soup. Did you face ragging in your college? or Were you a part of group, who pulled up legs of juniors?

@dpk262006 I would say I have been very lucky in this case. I never faced ragging. And obviously never did so. But many of my classmates particularly boys who lived in college hostels have gone through this trauma. What about you?

@dpk262006 Yes, they really should. But, many do not report because of fear.
