Singapore just celebrated our nation's 50th birthday on 9th Aug. It's been 50 yrs since Malaysia kicked us out. In the midst of our celebration, we can't help but miss our late founding Father, Mr Lee Kuan Yew, who brought us out of third world and into what we have today. We are also grateful to the pioneer generations who toiled really hard to bring us where we are today. We had our national day parade at various locations this year but the more prominent one would be back at the place where we had our first parade in 1966. To celebrate, trains and busses offered free services and most shops have 50% sale. How was your national day celebrated?

It is already Monday evening and now preparing for work tomorrow. The last 4 days of holidays have been so nice. I am glad to find another Singaporean in here. Yay. Well, whatever happened then, it happened for the good of Singapore. After 50 years, we could have this achievement is indeed thanks to Mr LKY for his boldness and leadership. I watch the parade from home, but I suppose the atmosphere at the Padang would have been electrifying. Were you there? And hello Ms Kumako, fellow Singaporean. NIce to know you in here.

Nice to know you too :) I prefer to watch live but I've used my entire family member's IC to ballot and still couldn't get a ticket. Been balloting for 10 yrs + and still no luck. Oh...I've got the ugly singa...the one that looks like graffitti on his face. I wonder who designed that. Kept in my drawer.......and now eyes are on the election -.-"

@kumako Ugly Singa? post a pic for all to see? Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. Nevermind about the tickets. Watching at home is not that bad. There's always next year to try again to get tickets, but I don't bother about that. I prefer the comfort of my own home. Hope to see you around soon...in here...and in Sg.

I personally stayed away from it because I am left wondering if the money spent on the gargantuan celebrations could be better spent where it is most needed, ie, in healthcare, in charity etc.

I think it is the start of the decline for us in Singapore. It is a law that whatever goes up will come down. There is a saying that wealth in a family does not survive three generations. I think by the time we celebrate 100 years of nation building, Singapore will not be as successful as the present moment.
