The British did leave behind something good and something bad. And the bad is to apply butter using a table knife. But using the table knife is not what I have found convenient. I use the back of the spoon and it works well for me etiquette notwithstanding. Table setting as you see in the image was good but not now with no maids in waiting What say?

I use both depending on the size i need to put butter or whatever on bread or biscuit...I think the back of a spoon fits better!

Yes indeed - my invention Whatever you say if the butter is soft and invariably it is kept for a while to turn soft back of the spoon should be anyone's choice

@Madison Ogashi is right. I was talking about what goes on the dining table. Our food does not call for all that, although there is no harm in adapting to things that one likes regardless of from where they come from.I wish I knew how to use chopsticks We use a fork and spoon while eating although most Indian houses don't. One cannot eat crabs with a fork and spoon.....

@topffer I prefer crab salad where the flesh is removed and a good Russian salad is prepared

@granny2015 I don't think that's she meant, she meant to say... the way us western countries use the silverware.

I prefer to use a knife. However, I'd use a spoon if a knife isn't available!

I wish I had a maid in waiting, then maybe my abode wouldn't be so sloppy

Don't worry You can bring the utensils right on the dining table and use the back of the spoon to butter your bread

There was a time I was so particular how everyone used the cutlery that was there on the table. That is history now. Sometimes the pressure cooker itself comes on the table Being used to maids in service it is difficult now to go about doing things the old way. Maids are not that easy to get these days.

Whatever works for me. If I'm in a fine dining restaurant though, I feel I have to conform.

I would conform too if I went to a fancy restaurant but at home it can be a spoon, fork or knife, I'm not that picky
