Do we really need to believe in saints who claim to be close to god?

I was really amazed how people are following the so called saints like radhe ma and asaram bapu and many more. I was wondering who are those people , who followed them religiously, though it is visible they are using god name for sake of money and becoming rich. Are people so blind or are they are paid too for following them?
