How to deal with tantrums of a stubborn toddler?

I have a cute and adorable 2-year-old god-son. He is lovely, sweet, active, and talkative most of the time. But he is also a strong will and stubborn child. When he starts to throw a tantrum, he will scream, cry or throw himself to the floor. We try to calm him down with many ways but to no avail. His tantrums can last for a long time which ranges from 10 mins to an hour. It is so heartbroken to see him cry and suffer. What can we do to help him overcome this period of terrible two?

I still believe that if a firm talking to does not do the trick, a spank on the tushy is needed.

This is what happens when he makes me lost my temper too. But if possible, I wish to minimize punishment and beating.

@whisperingwind I do lose my cool of course, but I would never resort to hitting or beating. Time out works pretty well once they understand they did something wrong.

@DanieGirl80587 It all depends on the personality of the baby. My boy actually understands that he is doing something wrong, but he just can't control his temper. Need to slowly figure out a way which is suitable for him. I'm trying to communicate with him more.

I have a 16 months grand-daughter. She is always in good mood - playing, smiling. But when she could not get hold of things that she wanted, she would cry and shout but it is not hard to divert her attention to calm her.

@whisperingwind I guess when she gets older, she may become more commanding - do as she likes - most children are like that, don't you think? I can understand how terrible emotionally is an agitated toddler. My grand-daughter does that at times. I feel sorry for the kid but at the same time I am also angry for letting it to happen. I always tried to talk to her and take her to look at things that she is interested to pacify her.

She is so good. How I wish my son is like that too.

When you find out, let me know. My son is 14 months, not talking quite yet, and throws the biggest tantrums. Ugh.
